The Differences Between Hunting and Target Shooting
I was asked on Quora: https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-key-differences-between-hunting-marksmanship-and-target-shootingHere is my answer: Dorf D’Impaler Writer and Pro-staffer (2001–present)2m Imagine a shooting match where the actual target, a ball, was hidden behind an indistinct piece of shag carpeting. You have to determine the ball’s location from the folds in the carpet. The light is bad. The carpet is moving. You’re cold. The coffee is gone and you’ve got to pee. If you succeed, you get to go home. Before you go, you shake everybody’s hand, and somebody takes a picture. Everyone wants a copy. You get to watch football for the rest of the … More . . .
Gobblers Go Quiet After Flydown
From:Old Gobbler Forum My answer: Years ago, I discovered a disused logging road on the back of the property that had recent tire marks. I decided to hide out near it and see what was going on. The next day, nothing responded to my calls at the roost and I went over to the road and set up. I wasn’t there very long before a sandwich truck came down the track and parked at a little turnout. A little Korean guy got out and started opening up the sides of the truck. It wasn’t long before several flocks of turkeys … More . . .
Can You Re-Use a Scent Wick?

Meaning after you apply say doe in heat to a wick, can you just use that same wick day after day when hunting. Not looking for opinions on this question, but would like supporting technical data as why you can or cannot re-use wicks. Do scents spoil after a period of time exposed to air? Will AI Replace the Shaman?
I was playing with AI the past few days and I tried feeding ChatGPT a title “Turkey Hunting Tips and Tricks” and letting it write a script. I then fed it to Pictory to build a video and then published it to Youtube. They say Turkey Hunting is the hardest game on the North American Continent. It’s certainly well beyond an AI to tell you how to do it. I did get a chuckle out of the result It took about 30 minutes for it all to happen. I just sat and watched. I also asked ChatGPT: Tell me how … More . . .
The Fernwood Doe
This took place in suburban Fernwood, Ohio. My day job at the plant is about 200 yards from this neighborhood. My buddy at work saw this happen outside his living room window. He reported that the doe must have tripped over a plastic drain pipe. That was the noise he heard just before the floorshow started. This was not due to ice. It had rained, but it was well above freezing. Don’t worry. He found her about ten minutes later munching on his bushes in the back yard, seemingly none the worse. Enjoy. This post has already been read 9046 … More . . .
Who was Big O?
I recently had a conversation online with one of my neighbors, Mike. Mike and I met years ago at the store in Berlin, but we’d lost each other since. He found this weblog the other day and wanted to say hello. We’re close enough that we could probably shout at each other across the holler, but we had to come to the Internet to meet up. That’s the way it is out here. I knew immediately that he was not a local, because his first name did not begin with an ‘O.’ Around here, that is a dead giveaway. He’s … More . . .
O.D. and His Theory of Deer Rifles
Several times I have commented to y’all about all the stupid hunting stuff that I find rolling around in my head. These are just bits of detritus that I have picked up over the years. A good number of them have come from my long-time acquaintance with O.D., the local deer expert. O.D. holds court down at Mister Browning’s store. He is most entertaining; however, there is something about his sincere delivery that makes what he says stick. In the past, I have listened to him go on about how a bout of bad weather drives every deer in the … More . . .
Biscuits and Gravy in Browningsville
We were down at Mister Browning’s store in Browningsville. We heard there were good biscuits and gravy available on Saturday mornings. O.D. was there. O.T. and O.P. showed up as well. One thing you have to remember is that it is important to have a fresh set of turkey hunting duds if you plan on going to Browningsville for breakfast in season. I was tagged out, and Supercore did not want to hunt in the pouring rain. He dressed. I stayed in my civvies and wished I hadn’t. Folks looked at me like I was some kind of heathen. They … More . . .
O.D. and the 2 of 7 Rule
I mentioned the 2 of 7 rule a while back. I’ve had a bunch of people ask me about it. I have to come clean. It is not my idea. It is not original. I cannot even say I fully believe it. However, I know the man who seems to have invented it. That fellow is O.D. I have mentioned O.D. before. He’s related to O.T, my turkey hunting buddy that owns the mower shop. O.D. is one of the regulars at the store in Browningsville and I frequently find myself propping my feet up next to his, drinking the … More . . .
Life with O.P.
Of course you know about my buddy O.T., the old turkey hunter that runs the mower shop and his brother O.D. the expert deer hunter that holds court at the store in Browningsville. The brother I met first, however, was O.P. , the baby of the bunch. O.P. has a trailer up the road on the way to Brownsville. KYHillChick and I hadn’t even closed on the property back in 2001 when O.P. showed up to introduce himself. O.P. was quite nice. We shook hands and all and then O.P. launched into his pitch. 1) O.P. wanted to know if we … More . . .
Happy Saint Hubert’s Day
It’s the Third of November, the Feast of Saint Hubert! I’d like to wish you all many happy returns of the day. According to legend, Hubertus went hunting on Good Friday and saw a stag with a cross between its antlers. The deer gave Hubertus the riot act and lectured him on Fair Chase. A talking deer was too much for Humbertus, who fell to his knees and prayed to God, promising to give up drinking Jaeger Bombs. When he got back to town, he renounced everything and became a holy man. Moral: Jagermeister is bad for you. Around our … More . . .
O.D. and the Squeaky Toy
There are little white country stores up and down Route 10 all the way from the Ohio River to . . . well, frankly I have never been past Germantown on Route 10, however, I suspect there are stores like that all along the length of the road as it winds through the Trans-Bluegrass. I used to favor the one at Lennoxburg, but after Jake retired, I have been trying others. It is a lot like finding a new church; you visit around a while until you find a place that is comfortable. All these stores are the same and … More . . .

Ban the Matches, Save Bo
I’ve been thinking about this situation. I’ve figured out something: We need to outlaw matches, lighters and all manner of devices that start fires. This is the root of all that is evil in this country. Arguments to the contrary are getting tired and unrealistic. Look at the statistics: http://www.cdc.gov/homeandrecreationalsafety/fire-prevention/fires-factsheet.html Think of it. We have advanced as a society far enough that we now have electric heaters to heat our homes. We have self-lighting gas stoves. If we really need to set fire to something. We need to call a qualified (and unionized) fireman to start one. No more DIY, … More . . .
Observations on Daylight Savings Time and Turkeys
I’m back in from the morning’s activities. My goodness! You would have not believed the difference a day can make. Yesterday there were only two gobblers active, both well off the boundaries of the test area. This morning? Let me give you some stats: 1) The gobblers went active 50 minutes later this morning. That’s ten minutes sooner than would be predicted by assuming the time change had no effect. 2) Gobbling continued clear up to 2 hours after sunrise. Yesterday, we had a two gobs give a couple of quick gobbles right at sunrise, and then that was it. … More . . .
Turkey Hunting and Daylight Savings Time
As you may know, I just love pulling this prank every year. The change to Daylight Savings time comes around, and I try to get as many people on the hook as possible. DST — More on this Deer Hunting Bugaboo
As you know, I have been examining the effects of Daylight Savings Time (DST)Â on sport of deer hunting– especially the effects on the deer themselves. This year, I have been conducting expanded experiments at the D&DH Pro-Staffer facility near Browningsville, KY. Three identical plots were created, each filled with a combination of ladino clover and wheat. In Plot #1, the Accelerated Plot, I placed test equipment including a Shamanic Anti-DST device that simulated the time change 2 weeks early. In Plot #2, the Control Plot, I placed test equipment but no Anti-DST device. DST will change back this weekend … More . . .
The shaman’s Magic Mirror
Remember Romper Room when you were a kid? There was Miss Whatever-her-name-was with that Magic Mirror that she’d always whip out at the end of the show and supposedly she’d see kids on the other side of the TV and call out their names. Romper Room came on the scene a little late in my life, so I was never really hooked. However, I do remember that magic mirror. I’ve got a similar version of the magic mirror. It’s called SEO– Search Engine Optimization . I’ve got tools that let me see what folks are searching for out on the … More . . .
The shaman and the Old Turkey Hunter
I was over early to the old turkey hunter’s shop near Browningsville. It was still February, but almost not. It was past time for breakfast, but still time for a second cup of coffee. This was the perfect time for going visiting in the country. No one felt obliged to offer you a plate of whatever they had anymore, and no one felt bad if you said you were still full from your own. A cup of coffee is always welcome as is the company.
More . . .Show a Little Compassion
One of my shaman buddies is all into compassion right now. I was watching his thread over on Facebook, talking about compassion. ” Compassion, compassion, compassion!” It hit me: how does compassion fit in with Turkey Hunting. You have to wonder some days why we go out and hunt turkeys. Our friends are right: it really is cheaper to go to the market. Turkey is about as cheap as it gets.  It would seem just a little stupid to go out there and brave the cold and the rain and sleet and later the heat and the mosquitoes when there … More . . .
