Imagine a shooting match where the actual target, a ball, was hidden behind an indistinct piece of shag carpeting. You have to determine the ball’s location from the folds in the carpet. The light is bad. The carpet is moving. You’re cold. The coffee is gone and you’ve got to pee.
If you succeed, you get to go home. Before you go, you shake everybody’s hand, and somebody takes a picture. Everyone wants a copy. You get to watch football for the rest of the winter and the freezer is full. Everyone wants some. You try and make it last for your famous dish you serve at the Super Bowl party.
If you hit the carpet, but miss the ball, you will be forced to walk for hours through brambles, ravines, and swamps. Getting home, you’ll have to retrace your steps in the dark with a heavy load on your back. When you get back, there is no celebration. You have the rest of the winter to pass with a gnawing guilt in your belly that feels like a real animal. You have meat in the freezer, but it tastes funny, and everyone knows why. There’s more than enough for the Super Bowl. You make an extra large batch to get rid of the meat, but at the end of the night, it’s untouched. Even the dogs won’t eat it.
Miss the carpet entirely? The freezer is empty. You go broke ordering take-out. You watch football, but your team loses. You think it’s your fault for watching. The Super Bowl arrives and you have to order a party tray.
