Gobblers Go Quiet After Flydown

My answer:
Years ago, I discovered a disused logging road on the back of the property that had recent tire marks. I decided to hide out near it and see what was going on. The next day, nothing responded to my calls at the roost and I went over to the road and set up. I wasn’t there very long before a sandwich truck came down the track and parked at a little turnout. A little Korean guy got out and started opening up the sides of the truck.
It wasn’t long before several flocks of turkeys showed up. Some smoked. Some drank coffee. Others bought a sandwich or pecked at a donut. They milled about for 20 minutes or so, before leaving. One hen was moving a little slow, and the Korean grabbed her by the neck and stuffed her in a sack and threw her in the cab of the truck while nobody was looking.Â
The rest of the turkeys all marched single file over to a concrete pillar sticking out of the ground. There was a manhole on top and somehow the gobblers could get that heavy steal cover off and the turkeys all jumped up on the concrete and down the hole. The last I saw of them were beaks and feet working the manhole cover back on.Â
Much later, I was able to trace the underground sewer to where it emptied into a drainage culvert next to the highway. I found tracks in the mud and a few feathers indicating recent activity. With this, I was finally able to figure out how the turkeys got from flydown out to the road, where I’d seen them pecking on my way home so many times.
