It is hard to pronounce any slug round as THE round for a slug gun until it has been tried. There are two things working against the average slug shotgun. First, the barrel is usually not permanently affixed to the receiver. You can improve accuracy on a dedicated slug gun … Continue reading →
I’m going to throw out some ideas on youth rifles for deer hunting. Maybe we’ll get a conversation going. Maybe not. This is just like the previous thread about deer rifles. It is about time to be thinking of what Junior’s going to be shooting this year for yute season. … Continue reading →
A bunch of things have come together to force this issue to the fore at our house. 1) We started getting the Outdoor Channel again on our cable. It had been missing for several years. 2) I got a DVR. 3) It’s been hot and muggy and I’m inclined to … Continue reading →
It always makes me cringe a little when folks start talking about .243 WIN. Mind you, there is nothing wrong about .243 WIN. It’s one of the cartridges that’s on my short list. It’s just that. . . well, see if you can follow this. I’ve been on hunting forums … Continue reading →
Lately I have been thinking about trying a crossbow. In Kentucky they’re restricted to only part of the archery season, but allowed in all of it if you can get a medical waiver signed by a doctor. I’m probably eligible. As I am getting into this, I find that there … Continue reading →
Back in the Summer of 2009, I went wild on food plots. The hay dude roto-tilled 3 plots. I put this post up in 2018, because somehow I’d lost the link to the original photos. Views: 6 Related posts: Food Plot PIX 2009 Deer Goals I Take … Continue reading →
It all depends on the product, and the price, and the claims. Mathews: seems like a good bow, but there are bows out there that will kill a deer for a lot less. Scent-lok: I’ve always been leery of this technology, the price is prohibitive, and a liberal dose of … Continue reading →
We went back to work on the Jagende Hutte II this past weekend. I got the porch put on, the sheathing primed and the end walls framed. We’d have gotten more done, but the storms hit around 2 PM, and so we packed up early and left. There’s also some … Continue reading →
Here’s a snake story for y’all. I was down in the Big South Fork, just before Turkey Season in 2000. My buddy that lived down there had taken me out scouting here and there, and then we assembled the whole tribe and went for a hike, heading downstream from Yamacraw. … Continue reading →
I brought the Shamanic Deer Battery back from its secret offsite underground storage facility the other day, and it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to take pictures to share with y’all. I’m always talking about this deer rifle or that one. You can tell that … Continue reading →
If I had to go based on my preference of season, I would say bow. I love being afield in October and watch the woods getting ready for Winter. If I had to base my response on what weapon feels the best in my hands, it would be my 54 … Continue reading →
It occurred to me the other day that this might be a good time to start a new conversation about deer rifles. Guys will be thinking about possibly buying a new rifle about now, maybe their first. So it is probably a good thing to throw something up on the … Continue reading →
We got to deer camp Friday night and did not even bother to open the doors. Instead, we immediately rolled out into the field to check on the food plots. I’d planted over Memorial Day weekend. In the interim, the farm has been soaked repeatedly. The results were fantastic! In … Continue reading →
If you scroll to the bottom, you’ll get into the serious hunting stuff. It’s not like a crawled in a hole at the end of turkey season. A couple of y’all have e-mailed me wondering where I’ve been. You have to remember that being a father is not all about … Continue reading →
A fellow over on T&TH wanted to know how to mid-season scout pressured turkeys on public land. Here is my answer. I have 200 acres of private land to hunt. It is not like your public land problem. However, I might have some ideas for you. You’ve gotten good advice … Continue reading →
I have gotten so that I hardly expect a bird to fly down to me off the roost anymore. That single idea has probably done more to improve me as a turkey hunter as anything else I’ve done in the past 10 years. A few years ago I thought I … Continue reading →
I really did not set out this weekend to put emotional closure on the season. Turkey season for me has usually been a frustrating experience– no less due to the way it usually ended. Noon would come on the last Saturday, I’d get up and walk out and drive home, … Continue reading →
“ I don’t suppose you want any of this?” I asked my friend. We were sitting in the middle of the pasture, enjoying the day. I was munching on some chopped chicken livers. “It’s really good stuff,” I added. “I always enjoy chopped chicken livers on Matzo crackers. They just … Continue reading →
Okay. I’m ready to come out now and say what needed to be said about honey holes. To be honest with you, I didn’t coin the term Honey Hole. It was coined by Brian Warner at Heirloom Turkey Calls. One night we were exchanging posts, and I was noticing that … Continue reading →
I guess this contemporary versus traditional argument has been around a long while. I guess I didn’t notice it until recently when it came to turkey hunting. It could be that the turkey hunters I know are mostly illiterate and don’t own PC’s, so they don’t know they’re part of … Continue reading →
Well, it was a good fresh start. It wasn’t going to last. I bagged that gob on Friday. Friday evening, my wife and sons showed up. We were treated to a bunch of hens and a mature gobbler out in the pasture just before sundown. The didn’t much mind us; … Continue reading →
I was feeling a might heavy when I went out this morning. The birds have just not been cooperating lately. It’s coming to the end of the first week. I’d stayed home Monday and Tuesday due to rain. Wednesday the wind had gotten outrageous, and it was promising to blow … Continue reading →

I finally made it to Turkey Camp. It was 62F outside and 50F inside, so I turned on the attic fan, opened the windows and came out on the front porch. I was met with two hens out in the far pasture, so I grabbed the binos and started glassing. … Continue reading →
I received the following comment the other day regarding my “Bubba’d-up” Mossy: Anonymous said… Inspirational. That’s what your ministry has done for me. I too had a sticky-tape camo job on my Rem 870 home brew turkey gun. Since I am the President of the “Order of the Blue Snood” … Continue reading →
