It stormed pretty heavily last night. I got up wondering what that had done to the turkeys. So I grabbed my coffee thermos and a boat cushion and headed out. Lily the beagle found her way out of the house and came along too. We went as far as the … Continue reading →
I’m back in from the morning’s activities. My goodness! You would have not believed the difference a day can make. Yesterday there were only two gobblers active, both well off the boundaries of the test area. This morning? Let me give you some stats: 1) The gobblers went active 50 … Continue reading →
As you may know, I just love pulling this prank every year. The change to Daylight Savings time comes around, and I try to get as many people on the hook as possible. I just started a thread over at Turkey & Turkey Hunting Forum: http://www.turkeyandturkeyhunting.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=8601 Please log in and … Continue reading →
I don’t usually get gushy about gear. If you’ve been reading my stuff, you know I’m . . . well, don’t send me something to review unless you want my honest opinion. I was looking for a buttpad for Moosegirl. She will want something to sit on when she goes … Continue reading →
From T&TH Forum Where would you go? by Virginia Boy » Tue May 17, 2011 4:18 pm Here’s a question for some of you long time turkey hunters that has been puzzling this newbie for years. If you had a parcel of land in farm country that was a mix … Continue reading →
There has been a vast number of hits at this weblog regarding the Remington 742, so much so that I feel compelled to write about it. It was 2004 when I put the 742 onto the rack, never to hunt with it again. It had served me well for over … Continue reading →

The tale of the tape: 24.5 lbs, 10.5″ beard and spurs starting to hook– I’m guessing a 3 year old. He was fat enough that he broke the stick I was using as a handle for my turkey tote.
Continue reading →This has been a busy off-season for me. Moosegirl, Moose’s squeeze, has shown an interest in both Turkey and Deer Hunting. Putting together a good starter kit for her for Spring Gobbler Season has had me scouring the web for good deals, collecting up turkey porn, and rummaging through the … Continue reading →
From T&TH Forum:Â “Calling vs Woodsmanship” Even though I am on the pro-staff here and a few other places, I don’t claim to be an expert turkey hunter. What I claim to be is expert at being a beginning turkey hunter. What I do know is how hunt conservatively and … Continue reading →
This is going to be a bit tickilish. I know my bow hunting friends might very well look at this and think I am knocking bow hunting. I am trying my darndest not to do so. However, it has been 5 years since I had to give up my bow, … Continue reading →
Over the years, I have gone round and round about in my beliefs regarding camo for deer hunting. I started back in the early 80’s just using whatever was at hand, mostly stuff recycled from my paintballing. I was a bowhunter, and I usually wore an old milsurp M-65 field … Continue reading →
Good question. Season is over for us. I still have a pile of stuff to do before calling it quits. The Guns One thing I learned over this season is that storing rifles in padded cases is bad Ju-Ju. I guess I was lucky all these years. I never had … Continue reading →

The drive back Sunday was all too familiar.  Rain, a lot of unused tags, snow in the forecast, and listening to the Bengals lose.   I explained to Angus that was how I spent a good deal of my early years as a deer hunter.  Somehow Phil Samp play-by-play, Horst Muhlman … Continue reading →
Y’all were really nice about Dad passing. Thanks again for all the good wishes. Normally I would have been doing more of a day-by-day report up on Deer and Deer Hunting. Now, here it is, Thanksgiving, and I’ve hardly written a thing. Sadly, there has not been much to write. … Continue reading →
It is always a bit of thrill getting to deer camp the night before The Opener. The preparations have usually been going on since August. The tree stand skirts are hung in September. Sure, we hunted a little in September and October, but mostly that ends up being armed scouting. What … Continue reading →
I do this every year. I know it’s neurotic. I can’t help it.  It gets down to Halloween and I start seriously thinking about the Rifle Opener, second weekend in November. Next I begin to wonder about how the weather will be. Usually it’s in the low thirties and partly … Continue reading →
As you know, I have been examining the effects of Daylight Savings Time (DST)Â on sport of deer hunting– especially the effects on the deer themselves. This year, I have been conducting expanded experiments at the D&DH Pro-Staffer facility near Browningsville, KY. Three identical plots were created, each filled with … Continue reading →

Every year I start jonesing over my successes after the season ends. You can see it if you look back here in this weblog. Deer season ends, and sometime before the first turkey gobbles, I get all wound up over my deer rifles and their loads. Somehow I get to … Continue reading →
