Ode to a buttpad
I don’t usually get gushy about gear. If you’ve been reading my stuff, you know I’m . . . well, don’t send me something to review unless you want my honest opinion.
I was looking for a buttpad for Moosegirl. She will want something to sit on when she goes turkey hunting for the first time this spring. Comfort is often times one of the chief determiners in making or breaking a first timer. Some times it is the little things.
I was on Amazon.com looking for a buttpad, and I found one for under $10:
Click on the image to see it on Amazon. This thing is big, thick, sturdy, waterproof and comfortable. I could not believe the value. I went back and ordered 3 more. I was not thinking about retiring my current ones. Those go back to 1997. I bought them to hang off our backpacks when KYHillChick and I first took to the trail together. $8 apiece back then, and while these new ones give up a little on weight, I think they make it back in comfort.
BTW: I stopped wearing a vest for turkey season over a decade ago. I wear what you could best describe as a turkey “purse.” This pad will be afixed to the purse via a bit of camper cord and a small carabiner. In fact, I’ll probably take the nylon belt off and use it somewhere else.
You can see in this picture, how I carry the two foam pads. One is for my butt the other is for my back.
