The End of Season
I was putting away all the deer guns yesterday. They have been sitting out for nearly a month. You can blame it on procrastination, but this is sort of the last thing that needs to be done before season is really over for me. You can see why it might be a little harder to do.

Well, the freezer is full. The rifles are about ready to be sent back to the secret underground storage facility. What did I learn? SODIUM BICARBONATE Well, for starters, I decided to push my baking soda regimen as far as I dared. The results? 1) The second rinse in the washer with sodium bicarb is a waste. I stopped doing it this year and had no ill effects. 2) I started locking up my used hunting clothes in a plastic bin with a sprinkle of sodium bicarb between hunts. Dreaming the DRT Dream
There is this lemming-like quality to deer hunters. Every year a bunch of us go running off the DRT cliff. Oh, some run over the Bang-Flop cliff, that’s over on the next ridge. Some take a dive into Poleaxe Canyon. I’ve run off of them a few times. It’s usually a soft landing, unless I hit rocks. One last little coda in all this: when I went to retrieve the rest of my gear back at the stand, the doe that had been hanging out all weekend had bedded only about 10 yards away from the ladder. She rose up and started to run.
“Don’t worry.” I said. “You’re fine. I’ve got my business to do, and you have yours. I’ll get on to mine, and you go have a nice day.” I guess she had decided to figure out exactly what had been chattering at her from the stand all weekend, and camped out there determined to have an answer. Fully satisfied, she took my admonition to heart and walked off.

You know those Hot Hands chemical handwarmers? One thing that I do is dump one or two of those into my breast pocket so they’re right over my heart. It’s amazing what they do to keep you extremities warm. It helps to heat the blood. I got the idea after years of climbing into stands and having warm hands for about the next hour– the hands were acting as radiators, dumping the excess heat into the air. Working Comfort Zone for Deer Hunting
Over on Turkey and Turkey Hunting, I was trying this past season to come up with a rational way to discuss the range at which we shoot turkeys. A lot of guys go out turkey hunting with guns rigged for 70 yards, but never get a shot at turkeys closer than 20-40. I try and ask a similar question here every year.
