A Cheap Feeder for Deer
A cheap feeder? Try this:
Take a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and poke a hole in the center of the bottom. Take a 20 penny nail and run it through a 4 foot section of broomstick– position the nail about 6 inches from one end. Stick the broomstick through the hole in the bucket. Fill with corn and hang. The corn will flow every time the stick is wiggled. Deer quickly figure this out and use their heads to manipulate the stick.
I saw this back in the woods one day and kept it back in my head for years. When I got property of my own, I tried it and it worked. You will have to use a knife to adjust the size of the hole to the optimum size. The hole does not have to be perfectly round.
The only problem I see with this rig is that once it gets popular, 5 gallons of corn gets used up faster than my weekend visits could keep up with. I stopped using mine years ago, because feeding did not seem to change my luck by much. Corn does not compete well with acorns. If the acorns are falling, corn will not draw them. If the acorns aren’t falling on my ridge, the deer are elsewhere.
