What Turkey Calls Should I Buy? 0 (0)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on January 9, 2023 by shamanJanuary 9, 2023

I’ve been at it now for over 40 seasons. I write for the outdoors, I’ve been a pro-staffer, and I’ve made a bunch of calls. Let me let you in on a basic truth: turkey calls are there to mostly attract hunters and not turkeys. I’m not going to say … Continue reading →

KDFWR Turkey Study Underway 0 (0)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on September 2, 2022 by shamanOctober 7, 2022

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) is investigating the reason turkey harvest numbers have been slipping. This past year’s harvest was well below average. I’m catching up here; this came out while I was having Chemo. Here is the link: https://fw.ky.gov/News/Pages/Wild%20turkey%20studies%20underway%20in%20Kentucky.aspx I’ve saved an image of the article … Continue reading →

PODCAST: The Virginia Rambler Goes Down 4.7 (3)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on April 22, 2022 by shamanApril 23, 2022

This did not take a whole lot of editing, but it turned out pretty well. I was out earlier today in the fog and managed to bring a gobbler in and close the deal. Some quick notes. First off, the extraneous pops and cracks is water dripping off the trees. … Continue reading →

The Shaman Nails a Gob 5 (8)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on April 22, 2022 by shamanFebruary 23, 2026 2

I had to call it quits last weekend. The trip out and back to the Honey Hole aggravated the leg, which had been the reason I spent the early part of last week in the ICU. I did not mind it much. Sunday thru Wednesday was cold or rainy– or … Continue reading →

Angus Scores in Turkey Opener 5 (9)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on April 16, 2022 by shamanOctober 14, 2022 1

The 2022 Kentucky Spring Gobbler Season started about as well as any. It rained overnight but stayed in the mid-fifties. The last shower evaporated a few miles from us just as we were heading out. It looked like things were going well. They did, just not for me. Angus and … Continue reading →

Mooselette Comes Out for Yute Opener 4 (1)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on April 2, 2022 by shamanApril 12, 2022 1

#1 Granddaughter, Mooselette, attended the 2022 Yute Opener with her Grandpa. I took her out to the Honey Hole in hopes of recording something for a podcast. It wasn’t much of a hunt; we did not expect it to be. Mooselette did not even bring a shotgun. We had fun. … Continue reading →

PODCAST: Closing the Deal 5 (4)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on March 17, 2022 by shamanOctober 14, 2022

This is the first podcast of 2022, and it is a good one. I got out to the Honey Hole just as a roost of hens to my left was pitching woo to a roost of gobblers to my right. Over a half-hour the loudest gob and the most vocal … Continue reading →

Sighting-In Day 2022 5 (1)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on March 6, 2022 by shamanMarch 7, 2022

Requiem for a Turkey Load I really cannot remember the last time I blew my wad at paper. It must have been ten years ago. I’ve been shooting pretty much the same load at turkeys since 1996, Federal Premium 3-inch 12 Gauge 2-ounce #4. The boxes have changed. The load … Continue reading →

How Loud Should I Call? 5 (1)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on March 3, 2022 by shamanMarch 3, 2022

From Old.Gobbler.com: I am always amazed at how sensitive gobblers can be and how far calls can travel. A good many of the turkeys I’ve killed at flydown have come from 200 to 400 yards away. Ones I’ve taken in mid-afternoon have come from much farther. Usually, I start off … Continue reading →

When Should I start Scouting for Turkeys? 5 (1)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on February 26, 2022 by shamanFebruary 26, 2022

When should I start Scouting for Turkeys? That’s a very good question. It certainly is a timely one. As I write this, the countdown is just passing T-Minus 7 weeks to The Opener. I’ve been at it 40 years, and I can’t tell you a set formula. For the last … Continue reading →

Bubba Paints His Turkey Gun Again 5 (1)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on February 5, 2022 by shamanMarch 28, 2026

Back in 2009, I spray-painted my Mossberg 500 with Krylon Fusion and documented it for Turkey & Turkey Hunting. The story was well-received, and folks not only liked the paint job, but liked the way I described it. If you’re interested, here’s the original story: I can report that the … Continue reading →

What is the best time of the day to hunt wild turkey? 5 (2)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on February 4, 2022 by shamanMarch 23, 2022

From Quora:What is the best time of the day to hunt wild turkey? I’m going to limit my answers to Spring Gobbler Season as I seldom hunt in the fall. Gobblers can be taken at any hour during legal hunting times. However, several things impinge on this. A lot of … Continue reading →

My Life as a Turkey 5 (1)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on January 8, 2022 by shamanMarch 23, 2022

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on May 9, 2021 by shamanMay 10, 2021

Turkey 2021: Third Weekend 0 (0)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on May 7, 2021 by shamanMay 7, 2021

Turkey 2021: A Progress Report 0 (0)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on April 28, 2021 by shamanMay 1, 2023

Our last bird was taken on 4/20. Since then, things have been fairly quiet. The next morning, we got 2 inches of snow dumped on camp. My hunt consisted of brewing a cup of coffee and standing at the open bedroom window and listening. I did not hear a gobble. … Continue reading →

Moose and Remnar went out to the new blind at Dead Skunk this morning. I went out to the Honey Hole. This was Remnar’s first turkey hunt. He had expressed interest in hunting the birds over the winter, but work intervened. I was sitting in my blind at 0738, having … Continue reading →

PODCAST: Another Galloping Gobbler 0 (0)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on April 11, 2021 by shamanApril 12, 2021

I’ve got a theory about gobblers.  It is all about gobblers’ personalities.  You see, I’ve been watching many generations of turkeys live and die on the property.  Some traits, like the motor-mouthed trait that I first saw in Mister Moto, seem to be genetic.  However, there are some traits that … Continue reading →

Yute Season 2021 0 (0)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on April 4, 2021 by shamanApril 4, 2021

The Mooselette got a chance to get out and deal with the turkeys on Saturday. It wasn’t quite the show we had hoped for. The cold snap had made it a rather subdued affair, and every gobbler seemed to be henned up. However, honorable Number One Granddaughter was able to … Continue reading →

ODNR Announces Proposed 2022 Turkey Season Changes 0 (0)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on March 29, 2021 by shamanMarch 29, 2021

From OldGobbler.COM Ohio is proposing a change to the bag limit. The new proposal taking effect 2022, if passed, would limit you to harvesting one bearded bird from public land. You can still kill two, but only one can be from public land. Oddly, they site poor reproductive years, but … Continue reading →

Indiana DNR Rule Changes 0 (0)

Genesis9:2-4 Ministries Posted on March 10, 2021 by shamanMarch 10, 2021

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has changed the rules a wee bit.  Turkey hunters can now use .410 shotguns, and can use smaller shot.  Deer hunters  can now use breechloading muzzleloaders (there’s an oxymoron)  like the Traditions Nitro system. See: Administrative Rule (Regulation) Changes   Full text here:   … Continue reading →

Genesis 9:2-4

2 The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every bird of the air, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea; into your hand they are delivered. 3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. 4 Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.
