PODCAST: Another Galloping Gobbler
I’ve got a theory about gobblers. It is all about gobblers’ personalities. You see, I’ve been watching many generations of turkeys live and die on the property. Some traits, like the motor-mouthed trait that I first saw in Mister Moto, seem to be genetic. However, there are some traits that seem to go with the land. If a gobbler starts inhabiting a given section of property, they seem to inherit the traits of gobblers that have come before him. That is how I seem to have many Mister Naturals that all seem to select that same strut zone out behind the barn at Broken Corners. That is how I keep running into The Garbage Pit Bandit and the Virginia Creeper. A gobbler comes and roosts in a certain spot and he gets to acting like the gobblers that were there before.
If you go back and look at what I posted back in 2016, you’ll see this:
PODCAST: The Galloping Gobbler
It tells the story of a gobbler that came out of Hootin’ Holler and ran right past me at The Honey Hole. This AM, I had an almost exact replay. It had been a quiet morning with not much good audio coming from the birds. A latecomer to the chorus was this rather muffled sounding bird between me and turkey camp. Things were boring enough that I packed up right at sunrise and started walking back with the Umbrella mike still assembled, hoping I could get some good audio of this bird.Â
I’d not gone far when I realized this gobbler was right up on the treeline, and he was heading straight for me at close to a dead run. I managed to hide behind some cedars, but still got pretty well caught dead by the bird, who only missed me by about 10 yards. He continued on, back the way I had come and cut through at the Honey Hole, passing by the fake stump within a few feet. If I had stayed in my original seat, he would have run right over me. Just like his forebearer, this galloper went off towards Left Leg Creek, pausing only to look back up the road, again missing me.
I have seen this behavior several times before. Gobblers go on a quest, looking for hens, and spend hours running about, pausing only to gobble here and there.

UPDATE: After publishing this yesterday, I left to come back to town. I checked to see that everything was all right before going to bed and found the site was down and giving everyone a security error. WT? I contacted the provider and it turns out you guys must have all jumped on at once and crashed the server.  Ooops. I guess I should feel elated; the post was certainly popular.
Bottom line: If you had trouble yesterday with the link, try again.Â
