My Life as a Turkey
It is currently showing 13F on the thermometer. There is about half an inch of snow on the ground. All the deer rifles have had their final cleaning. Something inside me flipped and now I am starting to think about turkeys. What really threw me over the edge was that I woke up at 0300 and could not get back to sleep and I poured myself some coffee and sat down with the remote and started to scan the web for stuff to watch. The first thing that came up was this:
It is the story of John Hutto and his attempt to live with a brood of turkeys. It is a beautifully shot video, and it will definately get you in the mood for turkey hunting. Let me also say that I find the whole premise whacked and Herr Hutto is one daft bugger for going there. It makes for a good 30 minute diversion. Enjoy.
Besides making for some good turkey porn for a cold January day, it does provide some interesting lessons. One thing I have always suspected is that turkey vocalizations are far more subtle than a lot of folks recognize. You really don’t know what they’re saying. There was another Youtube that I caught over the last week that kind of sums up how I see us trying to talk to turkeys:
