Turkey 2021: A Progress Report
Our last bird was taken on 4/20. Since then, things have been fairly quiet.
The next morning, we got 2 inches of snow dumped on camp. My hunt consisted of brewing a cup of coffee and standing at the open bedroom window and listening. I did not hear a gobble. The snow lasted until Noon. I went home and worked a couple of days.

The Shamanic Dream Team reassembled on Friday night and hunted all weekend. The birds were tepid. However, we did have a visit from the Galloping Gobbler. He hopped down from his roost over on the north side of Gobbler’s knob and ran over to the Jagende Hutte. Angus and Remnar were there. He got within about 80 yards and decided to pursue interests elsewhere. He then ran down into Hootin’ Holler and emerged in front of Moose’s blind at Foutain Square. Again, he skirted the blind and came over to me at the Honey Hole. I got my gun up. He got within about 10 yards, with some think bushes between him and me. The next thing I knew he was 30 yards away; he had done an end-around and come up on my 3 O’Clock. I got to see his head poke out of the grass for an instant and then he was gone.
On Monday, the bird returned. Again, he came from way the heck out to the North East of Honey Hole and ran towards me. However, this time, he jigged somewhere to the north and crossed over into Virginia, the finger ridge to the West of Honey Hole. He was running and gobbling most of the way. He managed to scare the snot out of a hen. She came at a run, putting the whole way, crossing Left Leg Creek and coming into the pasture behind Honey Hole. The Galloping Gobbler was on a vision quest. He kept going. I heard him disappear off the property in the southeast corner. All told, his adventure was 3/4 of a mile, at least what I was able to witness.

Tuesday was the most perfect day for turkey hunting I had ever seen. It started in the mid-Fifties and warmed steadily until I left at 1000. The only problem was the turkeys did not agree with me. They gobbled a bit on the roost and then crawled in their special hole and pulled the lid over the top. I came back to town. We’ve had thunderstorms ever since, but it promises to clear by tonight. The Shamanic Dream Team will reconvene at camp on Friday night.
