Continue reading →I opened the tailgate and started pulling coolers out. All of a sudden this big head flops out. I felt a little sorry for Mike and Stacey, after showing us their nice buck. We had to go drag out SuperCore’s “6-pointer.” What a buzz-kill.
Continue reading →Report from Deer Camp Saturday, 20 November, 2010: When we got up and got going this morning, there was a light ground fog covering everything. The moon was blood red setting over the neighbor’s trailer. SuperCore took off for his perch overlooking the top ofSkunk Hollow, and I decided to … Continue reading →
This all started with a post on D&DH Would new proposed USDA testing requirements have put the small country meat processors who hunters often employ to butcher their wild game out of business? Read the story here. I’ll leave it to you to follow up on what was said. I … Continue reading →
One last little coda in all this: when I went to retrieve the rest of my gear back at the stand, the doe that had been hanging out all weekend had bedded only about 10 yards away from the ladder. She rose up and started to run.
“Don’t worry.” I said. “You’re fine. I’ve got my business to do, and you have yours. I’ll get on to mine, and you go have a nice day.” I guess she had decided to figure out exactly what had been chattering at her from the stand all weekend, and camped out there determined to have an answer. Fully satisfied, she took my admonition to heart and walked off.

Genesis 9:2-4 Ministries of SW Bracken County, KY hosted members of the Cincinnati Caledonian Pipe & Drum in their 1st Annual Pumpkin Carving event.
Continue reading →I finally got some pictures back from my first wedding, and I thought I’d share them with you. SuperCore got married a few weeks ago and he asked me to perform the ceremony. I hadn’t done anything like that in a while– not much call for a shaman these days. … Continue reading →
Now comes the interesting part. Rather than running off, the doe just stands there, looking at him. The smoke clears, the woods settle back down, and there they are, just staring at each other. Moose is still expecting the doe to fall over at this point. The doe? Heaven knows what was going on in her head. Moose quickly figured out that the shot had gone wild, and he was glad it did, because he saw two little ones come up from the rear.

From the D&DH Forum Cut N’ Run If deer always walked into the wind in Fall, wouldn’t they all eventually end up in the Pacific northwest? Just kidding. This all reminds me of a story: O.D and Playing the Wind As usual, I’m going take a completely contrary approach to … Continue reading →
From the D&DH Forum: DeerCamp Super Member Deer season is long, but as you all know the off season is even longer. My question is this, with all the books, DVD’S, magazines, and countless numbers of deer strategies out there, do any of you ever get “burned out?” Here … Continue reading →
From D&DH Forum Everyday Hunter asks: Is it a moral decision to hunt or not to hunt? Let’s get philosophical. I recently re-read an article in Sports Illustrated (Nov. 24, 2008) on the decline of hunting. It ended with this sentence: “Wolves do not make moral decisions, he decided. They … Continue reading →
From Deer and Deer Hunting: For the Ninety -Niners It’s funny. I don’t think a lot of guys get it. It could be that my hillbilly girlfriend’s all-to-subtle ways are rubbing off on me, and I’m getting so subtle no one can catch my hints anymore. It could be as … Continue reading →
You know, the more I think about this whole Scent Lok thing the more annoyed I get. You figure an entire generation of hunters has been working under these assumptions about scent management. I am not saying scent management is bogus, but I am saying that Scent Lok and its … Continue reading →
So I was showing KYHillChick the latest on Scent Lok, and letting her read the piece on building an outhouse next to my tree stand. She screwed up her face a little and said, “Why do you do that?” “What?” “You’re such a. . . you’re always such a . … Continue reading →
Well, not really cheap bullets. “The Case for the Standard Hunting Bullet for Whitetail Deer,” is probably more accurate, but it sounds like a master thesis. This is just a rant. “The Case Against Premium Bullets” sounds mean spirited and negative. I am going to speak heresy here. I am … Continue reading →
I was out refreshing my licks yesterday; it was too wet during turkey season to get the truck out into the pastures. The ones that were already well established had been hit hard. I started one new one, and I am going to see how that goes. My opinions on … Continue reading →
From Deer and Deer Hunting SHKYBoonie writes: I have been doing a little study of my own through the past 4 years. I have been keeping a very detailed journal of deer sightings on my farms in West KY. Now this is just observation from me and the couple of … Continue reading →
Johnny Clay is in big trouble stemming from a 2009 deer he claimed as the #1 bowkill in Kentucky. The problem is that it now seems likely it was poached with a rifle in Ohio. Oooops. This guy is from just upriver from us in Adams County, Ohio. As I … Continue reading →
I got to thinking about things as I was walking out this morning. This is still a week before the Opener here in Kentucky. You’re not allowed to use calls. Of course, you can’t carry a gun either. Still, this is getting to be one of my favorite times of … Continue reading →
There is not a whole lot you can complain about when you finish off a season like this one. Angus had a good time. I had a good time. The turkeys had a good time. Nobody got hurt. I am starting to count down the number of KY Yute Seasons … Continue reading →
From Turkey and Turkey Hunting The hardest part for me? That’s changed over the years. It used to be just finding birds. Then it became finding the time in my life to get out and hunt. Then it became making sense of what the birds were doing. That right there … Continue reading →
I just sent SuperCore home. He was down this morning scouting with me. As you remember, SuperCore is the longtime friend that I coaxed into deer hunting turkey hunting. This is his first season. KY’s Spring Gobbler season doesn’t start until mid-April. I just wanted to take him out … Continue reading →
