New Storage Bins
With all the hoo-haw last summer, I got way behind in my projects. One of the first left to do was constructing some storage bins for the Shamanic Secret Underground Reloading Facility (SSURF). I originally built SSURF when moving my base of operation back in 2013. It houses all my reloading supplies, my reloading bench, my gunsmithing bench, and my deer rifle collection. I had originally planned a horizontal gun rack with drawers for firearms I wanted to keep in long-term storage, but there was not all that great a need at the time, and I put it off. As time wore on, and Angus and Moose acquired their own gun safes, the need for such storage diminished. However, the amount of reloading supplies increased. I, therefore, changed the design and decided to build two large bulk storage bins.
The bins take up previously underutilized space under the rifle rack. I had been just piling boxes of brass, cleaning media, and other miscellanies under the rack, but it had spilled out onto the floor, and by my birthday in July, I was having trouble navigating the room. It was time for a change. Within a week or two of the decision, my junk started swelling up like a pumpkin– that was change all right, but not the kind I was anticipating. With basic existential issues at hand, storage makeovers took a low priority. With that episode thoroughly over and done, it was time to get on with things.
I split the space into two identical bays, each 3′ Wide X 2′ high X 2′ Deep. I have been accumulating a bunch of pallets and scrap wood from work. It took 5 pallets and some 1″ X12″X 12′ pine boards to make all the pieces. I used the 1X4’s from the pallets to make the back and sides. I used 1X12 for the front and bottom. I affixed 5/8″ ball bearing casters to the 4 corners. I was surprised at how little tugging it takes to pull them out. I put everything together with wood glue and a 16 GA finish nailer. I have my collection of lead alloy in 2lb coffee cans in their right now, clamping the floorboards. Once they properly set up, I have a mountain of gear to put in them.
