DaFarm: Week 1 Progress
Things are getting cranked up at the farm. Here is what we have done. First off, the curing shed had to come down. Juni was helping me move a flower bed with his backhoe next to the shed in preparation to deconstruct it. Things got a little out of hand and we had to take bring it down a bit prematurely. I’m not faulting Juni. However some root had grown under the concrete floor and when he pulled. The shed’s time had come for sure.
Colson Construction arrived later in the day and began removing what was left of the shed and then began replacing it with a new 24X32 2-bay garage with a loft. By the time they pulled out Friday, they had manage to get all the poles set and all the girts in place. We will all reconvene on Monday. The gambrel roof trusses are due to be delivered.
After dropping the shed, Juni went off with the dozer and began clearing for the bunkhouse. I will need a driveway coming down from the dairy barn to service the bunkhouse. After that he will be digging for a foundation. This is just a first step, stripping off 25 years of growth from the few acres involved. Serious excavation won’t probably start until spring.
By the time Moose and Angus showed up Friday night, things were pretty quiet. All of a sudden we had a view out the back that we hadn’t had for 20 years. What had grown up had been quite a jungle, including a stand of water maple– some trees with 10 inch trunks. They helped Friday and Saturday stacking wood salvaged from the shed and whacking at some of the brush the bulldozer couldn’t reach.
UPDATE: I now have a Youtube of the shed being deconstructed. I’m sifting through the various videos I got during the week. More to come.
. . . and here’s a video of the first week’s construction on the Grudge
