Mooselette Meets Saint Hubert
I hope you all had a happy Saint Hubert’s Day. Mooselette did.
As you all know, Saturday was Saint Hubert’s Day. I’ve been touting this day for some time as a logical supplant for Christmas. On the Feast of Saint Hubert, the patron saint of hunters, folks should exchange hunting related gifts so that we all get to enjoy them before Christmas.
We had a family get-together for Saint Hubert’s Day. 6-year-old Mooselette, as usual wanted to go down to the Shamanic Reloading Cave to examine the gun rack and do fun things like “pull Grandpa’s handle.” The latter being a reference to processing brass on the Rock Chucker.
There was a surprise waiting for her in the back of the gun rack.
I found this rifle on Gunbroker.com. It is a Savage Rascal that was in a California youth shooting program. A pawn shop in Nevada had gotten the consignment. The stocks were a little ratty, but the barrels were near-pristine. I got it cleaned up for Mooselette and hid it in the rack with the pink sling that she put on a bolt-action 30-30 last year. In her mind, she thought the rifle had somehow shrunk to fit her.
I handed her the rifle and the first thing she did was throw the bolt open and check to see if it was unloaded.
We went upstairs and showed it off to everyone, and then retired to the yard to practice hunting deer and proper gun handling.
If your looking for a first 22 rifle for a young one, this is ideal. It has the Savage Accu-Trigger– the best out there. It also has scope mounts available. At six, she’s still a little young for it, but she’ll be grown into it by spring.
