A Happy Saint Hubert’s Day
Friday night I was able to get down to camp well before sundown. I was treated to about a dozen deer and 10 turkey hens and 3 gobblerout in the pasture. A good number of the deer came up close to the house. Just after sundown, 2 rather large coy-dogs ran out of Hootin Holler and crossed over by Broken Corners. The deer are moving a lot now. I did not see any rutting activity per se, but I grunted at one of the younger bucks and he mosied into the brush and came in to check me out, making contact grunts all the way. He’s getting the message. They should all be in full rut by The Opener next weekend.
While I was waiting for the crew to arrive, I inventoried all the ammo and took pictures so I’d know later if I had everything I needed at camp.
November 3rd is the Feast of Saint Hubert. I’ve been saying for years that hunting folks should switch this with December 25th as the time to swap gifts since waiting until Christmas leaves a deer hunter with 11 months before he can really use his gifts.

Moose, Angus and the Mooselette joined me at Camp for a final sight-in and gear check.
So what sort of gifts does one trade on St. Hubert?
I bought everyone one of these:
I bought one for myself last year as a new liner for my quad parka. Wowie! They’re warm. I figure folks can wear these around camp.
I also bought everyone one of these:
and some of these:
Everybody got their rifles sighted in Saturday afternoon, and then Angus went out to put up a ground blind at Glenway. The rest of us took off for the nearest dead tree to try out the camp’s new chainsaw. It’s a Stihl MS 250, and it cuts through firewood like butter.
My neighbor came down from up the road. He’s been recuperating from a nasty ATV-related spill. He’s all ready for season, and hopes to have his grandson out on the Opener.
