Everyone goes at turkey hunting a little different. One guy wants to take a gobbler only if he has called it into him. Another guy only wants to do it with his grand-daddy’s side by side. Another fellow only feels right if he’s spent $500 on ammunition and is wearing the latest camo pattern– vest and boots matching. Another guy only wants to saddle up his bird and ride it back to camp singing “John Brown’s Body.” We all look at this sport differently.

From here on out, a lot of this is going to depend on your personal style of reloading. What is your personal style? That is hard to say, but nearly every guy I know has his own quirks. We all pretty much get there, but we get there in different ways. The bottom line is that there is more to the color of paint on the press. Each press is a little different, but whether one is better than the other is in the eye of the beholder. The same goes for all the other pieces.

One last little coda in all this: when I went to retrieve the rest of my gear back at the stand, the doe that had been hanging out all weekend had bedded only about 10 yards away from the ladder. She rose up and started to run.
“Don’t worry.” I said. “You’re fine. I’ve got my business to do, and you have yours. I’ll get on to mine, and you go have a nice day.” I guess she had decided to figure out exactly what had been chattering at her from the stand all weekend, and camped out there determined to have an answer. Fully satisfied, she took my admonition to heart and walked off.
Continue reading →Now comes the interesting part. Rather than running off, the doe just stands there, looking at him. The smoke clears, the woods settle back down, and there they are, just staring at each other. Moose is still expecting the doe to fall over at this point. The doe? Heaven knows what was going on in her head. Moose quickly figured out that the shot had gone wild, and he was glad it did, because he saw two little ones come up from the rear.
Continue reading →Don’t be shy about exposing them to dead deer. This is one of the easiest ways in the world to demystify death for a child. They are going to have to come to grips with it sooner or later. I brought home a little buck back in 1998, and all the neighbor kids came down and wanted to touch it and ask questions. A dead deer is a wonder. All my kids had the choice of watching their dad clean the deer too. It helps to get the “ick” factor out of that sort of thing.
