We’re just in from the field with fuzzy windchimes hanging on the meatpole. Both Angus and I bagged bucks this morning. This was an average sort of Opener — average temperatures, an average number of shots. The weather was cool, but sunny. Angus and Moose hunted together. This is Angus’ … Continue reading →
SuperCore started his 5th season of deer hunting with . . . well, a bang pretty well says it. He nailed a nice doe on Saturday evening about 5:30. He took it from the Jagendehutte, with his Traditions in-line. The shot went about 110 yards, the doe was munching stuff … Continue reading →
I left a cheese wrapper on the ground this past weekend. I did not mean to. It slipped out of my hand at Lazy Boy and it fell to the ground and joined the leaves and such. I did not pick it up either. It’s my property and if I … Continue reading →
. . . and mine as well. At least it will be for a long while. We spent the weekend at Lazy Boy and Midway, celebrating Angus’ last deer hunt as a Youth. By next year, he will be 16 and be on and adult tag. It was Kentucky’s early … Continue reading →
A year ago at this time, I described Lazy Boy, a stand site that my son wanted to develop for deer and turkey hunting. He’s about to go through his last Yute Season, and it’s time to start planning for the future. We went out to Lazy Boy on Sunday … Continue reading →
I went back and reviewed the Outdoor Life article again, and I am not saying they are wrong, but there are some ideas worth discussing. First off, here is the article again from Outdoor Life referenced in the previous post: Best Deer Hunting State: Kentucky Takes Top Spot in New … Continue reading →

Well, we’re back in. Angus is doing a load of dishes before we pull out of camp. Yute season was a bust. We spent two days waiting for something to happen. About all we had to show for it was a single gobble about 200 yards away. Saturday, there … Continue reading →
They say there is no such thing as a honey hole in turkey hunting. Well, I have a honey hole. Angus and I were out scouting it in preparation for the beginning of Yute Season next weekend. I will let you be the judge. PODCAST: Angus and Dad at the … Continue reading →
I could have been out for late ML season in KY this weekend, but between the rain and the dismally few deer that seem to be on the property at the moment, I figured that it would be better to stay home, clean guns, and count the ammo. It has … Continue reading →
Angus was out for KY Yute Season yesterday. We did not bag anything, but we had a good time. The trip brought up a whole lot of issues, that I feel need airing. First off, as you know, Angus is a bagpiper. He’s not just a good bagpiper. He’s a … Continue reading →
It is just a little past sunrise, but there is a quite a bit of ground fog this morning. I sent Angus out scouting a new spot. We call it Lazy Boy. Part of it was because we’re trying to standardize the naming scheme of all our stands; this is … Continue reading →
I went my first 5 years hunting with my buddies. Then they all started dying off, and in short order I was hunting alone. It took two wives and 15 years to get me back to the point where I had two sons to hunt with, and a deer camp … Continue reading →
A Record Month!!! First off, I just want to say a thank you to all of you. August was the best month ever for visitors and the amount of content y’all were reading– about 20% more than the previous record back in April and double what it was a year … Continue reading →
What is left of Hurricane Isaac is moving through Cincinnati this morning. We had originally thought about staying at the farm all weekend, but the forecast seemed rather dire. We all opted to stay home. A wide-eyed Obama supporter showed up at our door the other night, asking our opinions … Continue reading →
I finally finished off my deer log. I say that, and I can envision a strange shelf-stable variation of venison meat loaf. No, I mean that I completed a spreadsheet listing all the deer ever taken at our camp, along with accompanying a data. I tried to answer the following … Continue reading →

It’s April Fools Day, and the gobblers played a trick on me– had me running all over the farm. However, I finally got close to one out on the tip of Virginia. NOTE: I broke this podcast into two parts after some folks said it was too slow to load. … Continue reading →
There has been a vast number of hits at this weblog regarding the Remington 742, so much so that I feel compelled to write about it. It was 2004 when I put the 742 onto the rack, never to hunt with it again. It had served me well for over … Continue reading →

This is going to be a bit tickilish. I know my bow hunting friends might very well look at this and think I am knocking bow hunting. I am trying my darndest not to do so. However, it has been 5 years since I had to give up my bow, … Continue reading →
Over the years, I have gone round and round about in my beliefs regarding camo for deer hunting. I started back in the early 80’s just using whatever was at hand, mostly stuff recycled from my paintballing. I was a bowhunter, and I usually wore an old milsurp M-65 field … Continue reading →
Y’all were really nice about Dad passing. Thanks again for all the good wishes. Normally I would have been doing more of a day-by-day report up on Deer and Deer Hunting. Now, here it is, Thanksgiving, and I’ve hardly written a thing. Sadly, there has not been much to write. … Continue reading →
It is always a bit of thrill getting to deer camp the night before The Opener. The preparations have usually been going on since August. The tree stand skirts are hung in September. Sure, we hunted a little in September and October, but mostly that ends up being armed scouting. What … Continue reading →
