Lazy Boy
It is just a little past sunrise, but there is a quite a bit of ground fog this morning. I sent Angus out scouting a new spot. We call it Lazy Boy. Part of it was because we’re trying to standardize the naming scheme of all our stands; this is in Lima Section, so stand names have to begin with and ‘L.’ Part of this was because Angus did not want to go through all the hassle of developing it like a normal stand site– clearing shooting lanes, putting up a tree stand, etc. Lazy Boy is a flat spot about 10 feet square on a hillside between Midway and Virginia. It has a perfect view down into a shallow hollow, and the ground has piled up between two trees so as to provide seating for one person.
We’ve been eying this spot for two years now. It all started as he began thinking about life after Youth Season. He will be 16 in a couple of years, and will need a spot to call his own. Lazy boy had a lot going for it. The head of the hollow has a cedar thicket that frequently holds deer. There are travel corridors along both sides, and we have bumped quite a few deer in there during family hikes. It is untouched; no one in our family has hunted it in the 11 years we have been here. Lastly, Lazy Boy is a shallow hollow, at least up close to the head. If you bag a deer and it stays put, it will be a short schlepp out to the truck.
Angus wanted me out with him this morning. We have been doing a lot together recently– squirrel hunting Lazy Boy, hiking, getting the stands set up for fall, doing chores around the farm. He went out yesterday and sat at Lazy Boy for a couple of hours. I thought it was a good idea to have him go solo again. He needs to start bonding with the woods and learn to come to grips with it on his own.
Yesterday he had a real treat. Lorelei, the doe that has been messing with me for the past couple of seasons, is back and is playing similar tricks with Angus. Just after sunrise yesterday, she came in and winded Angus. She left snorting, but came back a short time later and scoped him out thoroughly, getting even closer before heading off nonchalantly into the field.
He’s just in. Angus had another full morning at Lazy Boy. Lorelei came back for a quick appearance. He also got to watch a scrawny 6-point buck come and wander through the shooting lanes.
We’re off to get the tree stands dressed up for season and then get the muzzleloaders wrung out.
