It’s the Third of November, the Feast of Saint Hubert! I’d like to wish you all many happy returns of the day. According to legend, Hubertus went hunting on Good Friday and saw a stag with a cross between its antlers. The deer gave Hubertus the riot act and lectured … Continue reading →
Now that I have been writing this weblog for a decade, it is easy for me to go back and see what I was thinking and doing in the run-up to the Rifle Openerin previous years. Even before that, I have been dealing with getting ready for Deer Camp since … Continue reading →
As I wrote in a previous missive, I really appreciate the writings of Dr. Ken Nordberg. He, through his yearly almanacs, was very inspirational to me early on in my deer hunting career. I cannot say Ken got me started using a portable stump. IÂ was using my version clear … Continue reading →
It has gotten so that our early KY Muzzleloader Season has become a dry run for Rifle Season here at camp. We do not have any Yutes at camp anymore, now that Angus is hunting on his own as an adult. So this past weekend was like a dress rehearsal, … Continue reading →
I tell everyone that my place is in Neave, Kentucky, but I’m really closer to Browningsville. It is just that no one ever heard of Browningsville, Kentucky. Neave? Neave is the reason my zipcode reads Falmouth, which is way the heck over in another county instead of Brooksville, the county … Continue reading →
This is an experiment. I’ve had this idea rolling around in my head for 25 years or more. Back in the 90’s I started playing with the idea of simulating acorns dropping from trees as an attractant to deer. Deer hear acorns falling, and the go to investigate, right? My … Continue reading →

Only have two cartridges: 223rem and 308win. I’m looking to simplify my reloading by only stock one powder if … Continue reading →

Up until recently, I considered myself a connoisseur of cheap scopes. Bushnell Banner was about as expensive as I’d go, and I’d shot probably most of my deer with $30 scopes. I’m reforming. I started after last season pulling off cheap scopes and putting on something better. I bought a … Continue reading →
We were held up in town Friday night. It was hot and muggy and looking like it was going to rain, so we decided to wait to go down to camp until morning. That delayed things, but Angus made his debut as a solo hunter Saturday afternoon with a trip … Continue reading →
SuperCore was in a mood to go full auto last weekend, so he came out to the farm and we had a ball going through some +P+ 9mm. That’s a suppressed UZI. Many thanks, SuperCore.  Views: 4 Related posts: Hunting the Full Moon

Big Bob called me up yesterday and said that Dunhams was having a big sale and he wanted to go out and look at pistols and such. I didn’t have much else to do, so I tagged along. Dunhams is new to the Greater Cincinnati market. Where Field & Stream … Continue reading →
It was August 2004. My job was stagnant. The solder factory was up for sale, and all my big projects had been put on indefinite hold. I did not have much to do, but the company still needed me and the pay was good. I just had to figure out … Continue reading →
There are little white country stores up and down Route 10 all the way from the Ohio River to . . . well, frankly I have never been past Germantown on Route 10, however, I suspect there are stores like that all along the length of the road as it … Continue reading →
The Garden of Stone is a place at deer camp where we’ve been killing deer like crazy since 2008. It is a 200 X80 yard long pasture. My big luxury box, Midway sits at one end and my favorite treestand, Campground sits at the other. Deer come out into the … Continue reading →
At our camp, we have no particular standards. This is the first year we will all be adults– my youngest turned 16. I think it is rather goofy to have kids passing on less than ideal deer unless they choose to do so. I know there is a lot of … Continue reading →
I have tried to answer the question “How Smart are Deer?” for most of my hunting career.  I know they can’t be THAT smart. However, the thought has been rolling around in my head since I did that last piece about Ken Nordberg.   I was on my way to work … Continue reading →
Before I go any further in this endeavor, I want to commend Doctor Ken Nordberg and his son John. Their efforts in the field of deer hunting are exemplary– Ken for his body of work and John for his effort to make Ken’s work available online. The only “gentle nudge” … Continue reading →
Last year, Lorelei never showed up. I guess this is as good a time to write her farewell. This all started back in 2010, and lasted until 2012. I’m still a little hazy on the start of it. I do remember spooking a doe early in 2010 on my way … Continue reading →

I was talking to Moose the other day. He’s now in his late Twenties. He has a family and a job. We were trying to reminisce about the early days of hunting together. We realized how much of it was gone. We remember all the big things. We both remember … Continue reading →
This had started out as a fun 3-day weekend at the farm. It turned into a hard slog. However, I did get deer camp mowed and I did get to shoot some of the rifles I treated with Dyna Bore Coat. I am impressed. The point of the exercise was … Continue reading →
I’ve in the midst of sighting in a bunch of deer rifles. I changed out a good number of scopes over the past year, and now 30-some years of experience is coming to bear. In general I can say that I have been on the paper with the first shot … Continue reading →
A buddy of mine was a Jungian psychologist. They deal with archetypes and such. She always said that I was a Promethean type– a true hero mentality. I dunno about all that, but she did leave me some good Joseph Campbell tapes when she moved out. The setup for all … Continue reading →
