The short of it is that the Shamanic Dream Team came in from the field Saturday evening with two bucks making it to the poll.. Moose shot a 7 pointer at Lazy Boy. Supercore blasted a spike buck early Saturday afternoon. It started pouring rain, and no one had the … Continue reading →
I was on my way back to town the other day when our very own Foxtrot Charlie called me to tell me he was back from his sheep hunt in British Columbia. For the next hour FC detailed the hunt. He was still going strong when I pulled up in … Continue reading →
While I’ve been living at the farm more often, I’ve been looking for more places to eat. I’ve found a doozy, Bub’s Grill and Bar. It’s on State Route 165 between Powersville and Mount Olivet. I’ve been there several times now with Blacksmith. It’s now his favorite spot. It’s got … Continue reading →
Moose, Angus, and the Mooselette joined me over the weekend for the annual Yute Hunt. Mooselette and I went out together to Hollywood Saturday morning and saw nothing. Saturday afternoon, we went to S-10. About a half dozen doe came out and stayed until after sunset, but never got within … Continue reading →
If you all haven’t noticed, my output on this weblog has trailed off a bit lately. I’ve been fine. The family is fine. We have just been busy. As you may remember, Mom died just a year ago. She left me with a complicated estate. I have been dealing with … Continue reading →
I stumbled upon an article by the late Finn Aagard. Finn wrote for the American RIfleman back in the 80s and 90s. He was from Kenya and worked as a big game hunter until Kenya closed down hunting in the late 70’s and moved to Texas. His writing on guns … Continue reading →
It’s been over a decade since I stopped writing stuff for Deer and Deer Hunting. I used to be the go-to guy for answering questions on reloading and deer rifles. One of the most common questions I got was about sighting-in. I recently got that question again, and I went … Continue reading →
This question got sent to me via Quora: I hunt whitetail deer. I’ve been doing it for more than 40 years. I’ve got a whole battery of rifles that will take deer. Most of them carry a Bushnell 3–9X40mm scope. Some have 4–12X40mm. These are all fairly plain scopes with … Continue reading →
Okay, first the setup: I’m coming up on 2 years since Chemo. My energy and stamina are back to nominal. I’m still having trouble with neuropathy. Walking on level ground is cool. Walking on hills and off the beaten path is still a challenge. I’m just finishing spring turkey season … Continue reading →
It just past the six-month mark before the Rifle Opener. Already I am tying my stomach in knots jonesing on what rifles to take. It should be easy for a guy like me, just go to the rack as I’m taking off for camp and find the rifle that speaks … Continue reading →
Back in May of last year, I wrote this: I ordered a Rossi Model 92 stainless in 44 Mag with a 24-inch barrel yesterday. I could be writing this as an admission of weakness, but this isn’t AA. I did this with malice aforethought. Do I regret all the stuff … Continue reading →
I have spent a good bit of the last 25 years teaching folks how to be humiliated by turkeys. That was based on a good 20 years experience before that being humiliated myself. Not everyone I have taught to hunt turkeys gets it. I am not sure I even get … Continue reading →
I went back down to Turkey Camp yesterday. I had several projects that needed work, and I wanted to get out and listen to the turkeys. First off, let me describe yesterday morning’s scouting trip. Starting at 20 minutes before sunrise, a large flock started going off near the Honey … Continue reading →
This is the earliest I’ve tried to return to camp in 20-some seasons. A good deal of it is because I’m retired now. In the past, I had to wait until the weekends. Last year, I was still feeling the chemo and had to wait until someone else could go … Continue reading →
Two years ago, I got a Hornady Auto-Charge from Natchezss.com. At the time, I likened the transaction to dragging a topwater lure over a largemouth bass repeatedly. After repeatedly presenting it the bass, the fish strikes just because he’s sick and tired of seeing it. The question I want to … Continue reading →
This story really starts back in Regan’s first term. I got into shooting shortly after college. My main focus was hunting, but I also enjoyed plinking. To that end, my buddy Jerry offered me a 3-screw Ruger Blackhawk in 357 Mag. I went through gobs of 38 Special ammo with … Continue reading →

The title really says it all. It has been quite a while since I ate tag soup at Deer Camp. Not only did I not hit anything, I went through Early Muzzleloader and all of Rifle Season not drawing a bead on a single deer. Angus pretty much had the … Continue reading →
We decided to pull out after the Sunday morning hunt. This was after originally planning to hunt up until the rain hit on Tuesday. SuperCore had a doe. Moose had his monster that’s filling the freezer and then some. That left Angus and I eating tag soup, and there was … Continue reading →
I suppose an apology is in order. This has been a hard season for me. When things go right, I’ve usually gotten some meat on the pole by now and had a chance to relax a bit and get a couple of posts out. Either that, or the weather has … Continue reading →
As Patriarch of our deer camp, I am proud to announce that a new probationary member has been added to the Shamanic Dream Team. Foxtrot Charlie will be joining us at camp starting on Sunday. From the bio he submitted: FC is a 24hourcampfire.com denizen from 2005 or thereabouts. A … Continue reading →

I was preparing to write a report on this past weekend, and I looked up in the left corner and saw this post from last year. It’s not like that’s exactly what happened. Some of it, like the sighting-in of deer rifles, happened last weekend. We are planning to put … Continue reading →

I have not felt much like writing for the past few weeks. There has been so much to do. However, I did finally manage to get back out to the farm and get some stuff done. I started off by building some shelves in the bedroom to take my hunting … Continue reading →
