PODCAST: The Kitchen Sink at the Honey Hole
I was not expecting all that much this morning. I just wanted to get out with my recording equipment and make sure everything was ready for the upcoming season. I really enjoy recording the turkeys and if I could walk away with some sound, any sound, it would be fine.
I went out to the Honey Hole. I had not been that far out at the farm since the first week in December. I heard a couple of gobbles on the way, but nothing like I was going to hear once I got settled in. Yikes!
What you will hear is a lot of horny hens– one in particular– sounding off on the roost and then pitching down to the ground over by the old Newstand blind. A gobbler on Heartbreak Ridge heard them and he starts honoring their excited yelping. Then all hell breaks loose. Another gobbler comes from the western part of the farm, way over by the Garbage Pit, and runs across the field to be with the hens. Both he and the first gobbler start converging on the noisy flock. Eventually it all fades away.
But wait! There’s more. I had my thermos out for a refill on my coffee when I heard a loud cluck coming from over at Lazy Boy. I’d shifted in the leaves to change position just a moment before. 3 Jakes heard me, and came running. The next thing I knew I had them practically in my lap. I was not wearing camo, but they could tell I was there– just did not know what I was. They circled around and came up behind me and examined me from about 3 yards out before going back the way they came.
Enjoy.
