Goodbye Planet 4 MOA
I finished up writing my series on escaping Planet 4 MOA this time 2 years ago. KYHillChick sealed the deal on Christmas when she handed me a heavy box all wrapped up. I unwrapped it and found The Rock and the Medium Bag shown in this video from Caldwell.
I’ll be honest. Up until a very short time ago, I really didn’t think I needed one. More precisely, I didn’t think my shooting warranted having one. It wasn’t so long ago, that I was living on Planet 4 MOA and did not know how to get off.
Is having The Rock going to make me a better shooter? It may. I’ve spent most of the last 20 years trying to wring out the last bit of accuracy that I could. I’ll give it a try and see. Will having a fancy-schmancy rifle rest make anyone shoot better? Honestly, no. I’ve watched a bunch of deer hunters up on my porch, sighting in their deer rifles. Very few showed any understanding of the basics I went through in that Escape from Planet 4 MOA series. I do not claim to be an expert by a mile, but I know that if a right-handed shooter is at the bench and he doesn’t know what to do with his left arm, he’ll be shooting in about a 4-6 inch circle at best at 100 yards.
It took me a bit to figure out The Rock. It looks daunting, but it actually fairly simple. There is that big center spindle and nut. That lets you set the elevation. It sits in a heavy cast iron base. The feet are adjustable to level it out. The other two lever-looking thingies are just there so you can crank down on set screws to take all the wobble out of the system. The pad just holds the rifle on it– not in it. It is not a vice. Those side wings are their to pinch the top bag for rigidity.
When paired with the medium bag, The Rock supposedly allows sighting at a slight depression from horizontal. I need that. The 100 yard target frame is well below the level of the front porch
