I was missing some pieces, so it took extra long to assemble the podcast from the hunt yesterday. The reason for the name is that the gobbler chased a unwilling hen about 400 yards, trying to mount her unsuccessfully. I couldn’t figure out why this gobbler was zig-zagging in and out of the pasture and the adjacent woods, until I saw the hen. His over-zealous attempts at mounting her eventually led to his demise. I’m convinced the hen came towards me, because she was trying to fob him off on a more willing female. The original recording lasted well over an hour. I’ve got this version edited down to less than 40 minutes by cutting out some of the dead space. Just click on this link:

Podcast –The End of Pepe LePew

Y’all may be interested in the calls I was using. To get Pepe hooked, I started with a Butternut/Kwila box call from SS Custom Calls. Al Shoemaker made it for me back in 2015, and this was the first gobbler I have actually taken with it. That’s not due to the call, mind you. I alternate box calls throughout the season. Some are old favorites, some are custom calls that folks have sent me, some are my own creations. It just so happens that the turkeys have had severe lockjaw whenever I chose this particular call. As you can tell, it really did the trick.

At some point, I thought the gobbler’s attentions might be flagging, so I switched to a copper-surfaced pot call that I made for myself a number of years ago. Again, this has been the first successful hunt with this call, but it was long overdue. The striker was Diamondwood that I bought from Shipley’s.

I finished him off with a combination of digging in the leaves and calling with an H.S. Strut EZ Cutter 2.5
