Having an Understanding Wife
DeerMeadowFarm over at HuntingChat.net is in the doghouse, because he missed a wedding chasing a deer on opening day of gun season. He was looking for help.
I say don’t sweat it. They get over it. Some things just have to be done.
I knew one family down south of Memphis TN, that managed to schedule a wedding just before the opening of Duck Season. The groomsmen, the groom, and the father of the groom all brought their duck boats to the reception and took off for a week after the wedding.
My son was born during opening week of KY’s Spring Gobbler Season. Now that he’s six, he gets to go with Dad. However, for a few years, I had to hunt Ohio, which starts a week later. Two weeks after we were home from the hospital, my wife got a call from my turkey buddy begging my presence at the company hunt. She never squawked. In fact, she encouraged me to go.
Back in ’97, Girfriend told me that I just HAD to apply for the Beaver Creek WMA quota hunt in KY. It was THE BIG hunt that every buck hunter back home dreamed of. Some guys applied for 10 years before getting drawn. That was before I popped the question, which just so happened to have been at the 3 Forks of the Beaver Overlook in the middle of the BC WMA.
One day in October, I got a notice in the mail that I’d been drawn for the Nov 1 hunt. The problem was, we were scheduled to be married on Nov 1. I waited until she got home, and showed her the notice. She wrapped her self around me and squeeled with glee.
“Oh honey, that’s wonderful!”
“Uh, did you see the date?” I said.
“No, ” she replied, taking the card back. “Oh, November first. ”
“And? ”
“Oh, darling.” she said. “We can get married anytime. You only get to hunt Beaver Creek maybe once in your life!”
With that, I told her that we’d make the plane to Jamaica and get married for sure. A woman like that cannot be given a chance to get away. Of course, she feels the same way. I still haven’t gotten drawn for Beaver Creek since. Oh well.
