Treasure Your Hunting Buddies
I was on over at www.racksandspursclub.com. It’s a fairly new board, and one that I would heartily recommend to everyone.
Anyhow, I lifted a thread from over there. I guess my point in including it here is similar to what I said to one of my younger buddies after we got back from burying one of my older buddies:
“Yeah, Pook.” I said. “I guess the trick of having a bunch of old farts for friends is that you need to keep a steady stream coming in the door. There’s always so many checking out.
That was about 8 years ago. It ain’t true, ’cause it ain’t just the old farts. Treasure your friends and your hunting buddies, and never think you have enough. Everyone’s life is too short– your life as well as theirs.

Re: Looking for some new hunting buddies
All right, you’ve piqued my curiosity. You are looking for some new hunting buddies and you want to start over hunting. This leads to the questions:
What happened to the old hunting buddies?
Why do you want to start over?
I have this vision of this guy standing in the middle of camp, filled with lifeless bodies draped everywhere, a smoking gun barrel in his hands. . . >:( Don’t you just hate when that happens?
Don’t get me wrong, we all have bad days. :-X
It could have just been a bad trip. The canoe sunk, the storm hit, a grizzly attacked the tents. Finally it was just you and a couple of the other guys left and you drew lots. That sort of thing can really put a bad taste in your mouth. (rimshot). I have a heck of a time screwing up my enthusiasm next season after a trip like that.
. . . or it could be:
“Sorry, Cora.” Todd said. ” I ran over Jake with the pickup.”
“That’s okay, Todd.” replied Cora. “I’m in the bathtub, just slip him under the door.”
(Rimshot) 🙂
. . or my absolute favorite:
“Nine-one-one. What is your emergency?”
“I just shot my buddy. I think he’s dead.”
“You just shot your buddy?”
“Yes, I just shot him. We were out hunting, and I thought he was a deer and I shot him.”
“Is he dead?”
“I dunno.”
“Well, first make sure he’s dead.”
“Okay. If you say so. (Pause) (Pause) BLAM! (Pause) Okay! He’s dead.”
😛
Whatever the case, don’t worry, you’re surrounded by friends. You’ve come to the right place. Just please put down that ax, you’re scaring me. 😉
. . . but seriously folks. Thanks for the invite. Write soon. Write often. I’m new here too.

Re: Looking for some new hunting buddies
Well Heck!
Big Bear:
Anyone who can take a ribbing like that and stay good natured about it has a seat around my campfire anytime.
MrJBigfoot:
I stopped right in the middle of class one night and told this female student of mine: “You know, you’ve been laughing at my jokes all night, and I just gotta say that it makes it so much easier up here knowing at least one of y’all is getting the punchlines. I just wanted to say that I appreciate your appreciation. Thank you.”
You know what happened? A year later, we were married and had a kid on the way. Go figure.
Anyhow, Thank you. If you like my material that much, you’re welcome at my campfire too. It’s especially funny when I catch you with a good one and you spray beer out your nose.

Re: Looking for some new hunting buddies
Now that the dust has settled a bit, and folks have picked themselves off the floor, I guess I can get serious.
BigBearHunter, I’m sort of in the same boat. In my case, I just happened to get introduced to hunting and shooting by a group of old farts. In my early twenties, I was the baby of the bunch by at least twice my age.
A lot of them died young– cancer mostly. However, by the time I was 38, I was on my own. The last of the bunch, Big Bob, is still breathing. His legs won’t carry him very far anymore. I’ve had him out to the new camp, but he hasn’t hunted in years.
My solution has been to start growing a crop of my own. If you check out my website, you can see that two of my three sons have taken to it well. Mooseboy (#2 Son) is 13 , and has deer and a turkey to his credit. He’s also starting to post over on 24hourcampfire. Angus (#3 Son) is 7 and is well on his way. It’s cool, but it can’t be quite the same.
I had two of my work buddies over last night for dinner. We were talking in a room with a bunch of my trophies and pictures and such, and they were asking about them. After a bit Dave turned to Ed and said, ” You know, everyone in Shaman’s stories is dead.”
“Yeah,” replied Ed. “I figured that out ages ago.”
“It’s kinda creepy.” said Dave, looking at my walls.
So anyhow, you got all that, and the fact I just turned 47 last week, and then there was your post. It got me to thinking last night, and I woke up with it this morning.
BigbearHunter, I hear you. Write soon. Write often.
