As if the previous night and morning weren’t enough, the real business of getting ready for deer season had yet to begun.  #3 son, Angus, showed up at lunchtime on Saturday and we went down the do-list in fairly rapid succession.

Angus got a chance after all that to go squirrel hunting in Hundred Acre Wood and managed to bag a big grey.  We watched for deer until moonrise and then headed off for dinner in Falmouth.

Moose and Mooselette joined us at our return.  #1 Granddaughter and I hit the rack, while #2 and #3 sons went out back to watch the blue moon.  They heard bucks clashing in the pasture until they went to bed.

Remnar and Company showed up before sunrise Sunday.  By this time it had gotten rather blustery with wind gusts up to 20 MPH and it only got worse as the day progressed.  The guys went out squirrel hunting at Garbage Pit and made it down to the southeast corner before heading back up.  While there, Moose managed to bag a squirrel– a pretty awesome feat in light of the wind.  They noted a large food plot recently put in across Yellow Willow Creek that was just sprouting.

On their return, we mounted up a trip to Fountain Square South, the new stand site for Remnar.  This has view of the pasture where all the bucks were fighting  along with good views of the The Hand, Fountain Square and the top of Middle Leg Creek. It’s chief feature is that commands a view of a hole in the fence that that allows fairly easy passage out the top of Hootin Holler and into the fields to the west.  All manner of wildlife come through that gap.  There has been considerable scraping activity close by the stand.

Angus had cut out the intervening limbs Saturday afternoon. Remnar had procured a nice buddy stand and we set about helping him with its erection.  This was Remnar’s first time with a treestand, so we included Special High-Intensity Training on treestand safety.

We buttoned up operations in the early afternoon. I had to beat it back for an anniversary dinner with KYHillChick– 23 years, she’s been putting up with the old deer hunter.
