Turkey Scouting with the Mooselette
This past weekend was shaping up to be a major disappointment. I was out Saturday to scout, and for the second weekend in a row I only heard gobblers that were well off the property. Normally, I would have a podcast or two under my belt. Nothing.
Late afternoon on Saturday brought a sincere surprise. I knew well in advance that Moose and #1 Grand-daughter, Mooselette, were going to come down for a visit. What I had not expected was #3 son, Angus to show up with #1 son, Junior. Junior doesn’t hunt or shoot, and he seldom makes it down to the farm. He prefers staying home for the most part. However, as he gets older, he is stretching out more. This was his first visit in a long, long time.  The crew brought sirloins. We feasted together before retiring late.
I awoke before sunrise on Sunday. As soon as I put up the window, I was met with a hearty gobble from a gobbler down in Dead Skunk Hollow. Mooselette and I got ready in a hurry and went out to a neighboring hillside to listen. Sadly, the gobbler only repeated his gobbling a couple of times, but there was enough action that Mooselette declared that turkey scouting was one of her favorite things to do.
She got a bonus as well. As we sat there, the sun started to come up. I did not know previous to this that Mooselette had never seen a sunrise. It wasn’t all that much of one in the big scheme of things. It was not even fully up before it disappeared behind a cloud, but was enough for her. I promised that turkey hunters get to see all sorts of sunrises. We shortly went back to the house so I could get my coffee and put on some Ben Lee tapes.

You’ve got a great thing at your place. Beautiful farm, family, and good times. That’s what it is all about.
