Counting down the Minutes
. . . Or Life Comes at you Fast.
. . . Or something like that.
The countdown clock just passed 1 Day, One Hour, and 1 Minute to the Spring Gobbler Opener. I’m leaving for camp some time this morning. The past couple of weeks have been a bit of a blur. I’m not going to bore you with the details, but the net of it is that I had a major reminder of the ephemeral nature of Life. There was a time in the past week when I figured this might be my last Turkey Opener. Then, with a bunch of tubes in my arms, it looked like I might not be getting out at all.
I spent Tuesday night and most of Wednesday flat on my back in the ICU. It turns out the pain I’d been having in my left leg for about the past month was a blood clot, and the blood clot had gone to my lung. Don’t worry, I didn’t have any pain or suffering or anything. In fact, I have been enjoying the best health in 5 years. They put me in the ICU bed, because that clot could come loose at any moment and. . . no turkey season.
Wednesday afternoon a doc came in and told me to go home. I’m on some strong, injectable blood thinner. I asked him specifically about Turkey Season. He said the worst thing I could be doing is staying home.
I’m going to be honest with y’all, so you’d best sit down. This is news best taken with a strong scotch poured.
Remember this ?
Well, the reason they started looking for blood clots was that the malignancy is back. The good news is that, through incredibly good luck, I went to the doc at just the right moment. The bad news is that it is looking like this summer is going to be one hot mess. Things are going to ramp up right after Turkey Season. I may have to go on hiatus again, and it may last until fall. However, the bit that is involved is going to be easy to zap, and I thoroughly expect to be in my treestand for the Rifle Opener.
Yeah, I know. It sucks. However, the doc warned me back in August that this might turn into a big game of Wackamole for a while.
