Podcasts
Now you have to understand that I ran an underground radio station in High School, and started out going to college to be a radio announcer. It has been about 35 years since I pulled shift on the radio, but I still enjoy being a ham at the mike.
Ever since the first Spittin’ Feathers CD, I have been hooked on the idea of recording turkeys. Mike Battey’s work was groundbreaking, and to this day he’s got some of the best recordings I’ve ever heard. About 5 years ago, I started seriously working on doing recordings of my own.
Everyone has their own angle on turkey hunting. Some get off on making tight patterns with their shotguns. Some people are all into making calls. Me? My favorite end of turkey hunting is making recordings, and my season starts about a month and a half before the Spring Gobbler Season, when the turkeys are just coming out of their winter flocks.
During season, it is really simple to keep a Digital Audio Recorder handy and running, so besides turkey sounds, I also record my hunts.
How to Listen:
UPDATE: You can just click on the links now; there’s enough bandwidth. However, I’ll keep PLAN A and B up for folks that have trouble.
PLAN A: Probably the best way to listen to one of these podcasts is to first click on the post. In the post is a link to the podcast itself. Right click on that and then Save As to your local hard drive. The podcasts are in .MP3 format and can be played from any device. I limit them to under 15 minutes or so per segment. My server is with FatCow.com and the performance is bovine to say the least.
PLAN B: Yes, you can just click on the link and it will play off the server, but it can get frustrating. Try it both ways and see what you think. A lot depends on the type of connection you have. Down at camp, the tin cans need to be brushed extra clean and the string needs to be pulled extra tight to get a consistent play directly off the server. It also requires that I be holding onto the cold water pipe when I click the mouse.

PODCAST: Wake-up Call
etter late than never, here is the best of about 40 hours of recording. This is not like my other podcasts, because it is just raw turkey sounds with no commentary, no banjo music. The original recordings were from mid-April on a morning where all heck broke loose at the Honey Hole. I had several gobblers come in on me, but I could never get the cross-hairs on them. I selected the source tracks, because they were particularly clean and mixed it so it would be perfect wake-up music.
More . . .PODCAST: Angus Rolls the Gob
We’re just in from Turkey Camp– end of Week #1 of KY Spring Gobbler Season.
In between doing battle with the gobblers, I’ve been trying to edit down the podcast of Angus’ last hunt as a yute. It was a challenge– a lot of wind noise in the original sound. Some of it may sound a little funky, and there were three setups before we finally got a shot at a gobbler.
Let me know what you think

PODCAST: Gobblers at the Honey Hole
It has been a good year back at Turkey Camp. After such a horrible winter, it was good to have decent weather. We have had 3 good weekends. The only thing that has not been cooperating has the turkeys. Oh, they have been there, all right. They just have not been all that vocal. This morning was Different. Angus and I started at the Honey Hole, but a gobbler started sounding off back towards the house, so we followed him. After he hopped down from the roost and left, a doe showed up. She was very curious about what we … More . . .
PODCAST: The Honey Hole
They say there is no such thing as a honey hole in turkey hunting. Well, I have a honey hole. Angus and I were out scouting it in preparation for the beginning of Yute Season next weekend. PODCAST: Locator Calls up on Gobbler’s Knob
It was cold and snowy on Sunday– didn’t know if I would be able to make it back to town, so I stayed back and finished off a podcast from my last trip down to turkey camp. This one was neat, because it had a whole bunch of things other than gobblers in it. There were hens, crows, owls, and even a hawk. I collected all this in the half-hour either side of sunrise last weekend in a trip up to Gobbler’s Knob. I was sitting in my favorite spot, about 20 yards behind the Jagendehutte, up on top of … More . . .
PODCAST: Of Buffalo and Old Krauts
I have some new recording gear and some new material, and a new urge to do a new season of podcasts. This one? Well, I got up early to watch the sunrise, drink my coffee and rant about the 2nd Amendment. PODCAST: Of Buffalo and Old Krauts Did I mention I got Angus a banjo for Christmas? Free bumper music forever! Little booger’s hands nearly froze playing out there. Some quick plugs: First is Friedrich Gerstäcker, and his book Wild Sports: Rambling and Hunting Trips Through the United States of North America Second plug is for my new Tascam DR-05 … More . . .
PODCAST: Angus Scores in Last Minute Hunt
This was going to be our last chance. Angus and Supercore both had gone dry going into the last day of season. Saturday had been plagued with rain that had kept the gobs quiet and the hens hiding. Angus did manage to nail a coyote around sunrise that came to our calls. We could not recover the carcass. This was it– last day of season. SuperCore went out to Broken Corners. I took Angus to Quarterway– halfway between the Honey Hole and Midway. We heard nothing except a gobbler off the property getting cranked up, but there were a bunch … More . . .
PODCAST: Tagged Out in 2012
Things developed slowly today, but the gobbler I podcasted the other weekend back at Virginia came in through the back door, cakewalking down the road like he owned the place. He got to the gate leading to the Honey Hole and met up with some #4 Federal from my Mossberg. Podcast — Tagged Out in 2012! Here are the all-important stats: Weight: 22 lbs Beard: 11 inches Spurs: L: 1.5″ R: 1.25″ That’s it for me, but Angus and SuperCore still have plenty of tags. SuperCore was out with me this afternoon. We were pinned down by five hens out … More . . .
PODCAST: The shaman scores in KY Opener 2012
I went out this morning with low expectations. Rain was due before Noon. I figured that there would be nothing particularly hot, but the opener is after all The Opener, right? Angus and SuperCore went out to Broken Corners. We are fairly convinced that gob that I caught on the Podcast a couple of weeks ago is indeed Mister Moto. That makes the third season he’s been gracing the Hundred Acre Wood. Angus and SuperCore went out to kill him. I went to the new blind Angus and I prepared halfway between Midway and the Honey Hole. Halfway to Midway. … More . . .

PODCAST: A Walk Through Virginia
It’s April Fools Day, and the gobblers played a trick on me– had me running all over the farm. However, I finally got close to one out on the tip of Virginia. PODCAST: Out Scouting the Left Leg
It stormed pretty heavily last night. I got up wondering what that had done to the turkeys. So I grabbed my coffee thermos and a boat cushion and headed out. Lily the beagle found her way out of the house and came along too. We went as far as the entrance to Virginia before encountering a gobbler still on the roost at the head of The Left Leg, a small creek running down the east side of Virginia. I set up in a treeline and recorded about 15 minutes of gobbling. Shortly into it, another gobbler, The Garbage Pit Bandit … More . . .
PODCAST — Turkey Opener 2011
The tale of the tape: 24.5 lbs, 10.5″ beard and spurs starting to hook– I’m guessing a 3 year old. He was fat enough that he broke the stick I was using as a handle for my turkey tote.

PODCAST: Busy Morning
I’ve been down at Turkey Camp all weekend, and we’ve been up to a lot of things. This morning I got out early and managed to catch a gobbler and hen with my new sound rig. Sit back, plug in your headphones and have a listen. Gobblers and Hens at Broken Corners Here’s my new recording rig. Yes, that’s right. It’s a paint roller handle and an umbrella hat, but it makes a dandy parabolic mike.
