Mooselette’s Yute Opener
This year was most honorable #1 Granddaughter’s first attempt at a turkey hunt while fully armed. Mooselette had been out with me on several turkey hunts over the years. This was her first as a hunter. She went with Daddy Moose out to Dead Skunk, while I tried to record the gobblers out at The Honey Hole.
Over the past winter, Mooselette had come a long way toward mastering a mouth call. She and her father worked a few gobblers. She got a gob to answer her calls. However, the turkeys were in no mood for coming to a strange voice. They were still very much henned up. I heard one gobbler roosted down on Heartbreak Hill. He and his entourage of hens made it up into the pasture to the north of Midway. I got to see them feeding at a distance. The wind was coming up by then, and it ruined any chances of making a recording.
The weather was our undoing this weekend. Friday was an all-day rain. I had a herd of turkeys out in the field most of the day pecking at worms, but I could do nothing but watch from the window. There was just enough of a let-up for Team Moose and Uncle Angus to arrive before we started getting thunderstorms and high wind. These all cleared out by 0300 but Saturday saw high wind and dropping temperatures. The station at the house recorded a 43 MPH gust just before the power went out. It stayed off all afternoon, and as the sun was setting, we decided to evacuate back to town.
