Report from Deer Camp: SuperCore’s Double-Header
NOTE: At some point in the distant past, the tale of SuperCore’s first successful hunt disappeared out of the archives of this weblog.  We have the photographs and the log entries. I will attempt to recreate the story with SuperCore’s help. I’ll leave this up as current business and then move it to the 2009 archive where it belongs.
Sunday morning of The Opener was cold, clear and calm. Angus had followed me out to Midway again. We had little action. At 0930 the very distinctive report of an M1 Garand rang out from the direction of Faulty Towers, followed by another. That was SuperCore for sure. Shortly thereafter, we heard “Pop! Pop! Pop! Pop!” — several pistol shots. SuperCore had brought a 32 ACP with him and was attempting to use that as a finisher. As he was to discover, the best finisher would have been delivered from his rifle, standing back a ways, but this was his first hunt. He was learning.
SuperCore called, and we came in to help retrieve the carcasses. We found a doe and a button buck. The latter had dropped close to the blind. The latter had crawled off someways. We got them loaded in the truck and headed into the meatpole.
SuperCore now faced the daunting task of cleaning his first deer. It was complicated by the fact that there were two deer facing him and he had hurried one of the shots and there was some involvement in the abdominal cavity. I talked about it with SuperCore over a decade later; he still cannot bring himself to bite his fingernails.
COMMENT FROM SUPERCORE:
Dude! This is right on the money!! The button buck was running away from me when I shot him in the butt, and it came out thru his throat. 30-06 is nothing to messwith! After biting my nails for 60 years, 11 years laterI still cannot put my fingers in my mouth.
