How Do You Protect Your Stand From Theft?
I used to use log chain and a 1/2″ lock to lock up my climbing stand. It was noisy as all get-out, but it would have been easier to saw the stand as cut the chain. Nobody ever stole my stand– they went to the next guy.
The fact of the matter is, if you are in a safe area, nothing is going to happen to it. If it isn’t, the perps have all the time in the world to figure out a way to steal it.
I go for relatively cheap ladder stands now. Nobody steals them, because they’re cheap. If those start disappearing, I know I have a problem, and I need to put out more Claymores and pungie sticks.
“Face Towards Enemy” — what a simple statement and yet so pregnant with meaning. I think of it as words to live by, don’t you?
But I am just such a kidder? How do I protect my stands from theft?
Begin talking to yourself at places like the feed store, the hardware store, and the grocery. It also helps ranting to everyone that you’ve finally snapped and the next poacher you find is going to get fed to the hogs. Never mind that you don’t keep hogs. This is immaterial.
It also helps if you load up some wax wad salute rounds with a dribble of Hodgdon H110 and make a habit of firing into the air as you’re leaving your stand. Yell at the top of your lungs, “I told you I’d do it! You made me do it! Aw Lawdy help me! What have I done?” Leave disturbed piles of dirt approximately 2.5′ by 6′ randomly in the woods.
Wash, rinse, repeat.
