The Turkey Trigger Tripped
I’m not one of those guys who dreams of turkey hunting all year. By the time mid-May comes around, I’m pretty well done with the whole thing. Don’t get me wrong; I love turkey hunting. It is just such a frustrating and humbling process that I get tired of getting my nose rubbed in it. It is not like I really have any choice in the matter. The state shuts down the season and the gobblers shut down themselves. There are things to do, and camps to be made. fishing to be done. Move along. There is nothing more to see.
On a year like this, eating tag soup with the deer, there is a continuing longing– an itch I can’t scratch. All that ends when my turkey trigger kicks in. Most years, I need biting cold and snow on the ground to get my brain kicked over to turkey mode. This year, it is just the promise of snow showers this afternoon that seems to have done it. I have a need to go downstairs and count my shells. I need to bring up my box of calls and start pulling on my favorites.
Turkey porn. I need turkey porn. Youtube is filled with turkey porn. I want to see gobblers get blasted. I want to see flocks fleeing for their lives.
I was checking the long-range forecasts this morning, and the NWS has issued an advisory that the El Nino we’re currently experiencing will peeter out in April.
Bottom line: Warmer than average temperatures with normal amounts of precipitation from March thru June for all of KY.
Just crossing 106 days to the Opener.
Foxtrot Charlie
Foxtrot Charlie agreed well before we parted Deer Camp that wild turkey was definitely on his menu. He is a complete neophyte. I had to explain that unlike the big game he has pursued before, turkeys are quite different. He’s up for the challenge, and will be visiting Turkey Camp this spring.
I sent him a link to the series I did a few years ago:
He is in the process of putting his kit together. I plan on bringing him along for my podcast trips in March.

I was just thinking of this yesterday, when I went ahead & purchased the turkey choke, & 2 kinds of #4 shot, 1 7/8 oz turkey loads that my offspring neglected to provide for Christmas. So much for going out of my way to provide specific Christmas hints this year. The 2x Pentax is mounted atop the 870 in a saddle mount, so now I need to figure out if it makes sense to zero the scope using a different load, than to waste the finite turkey load shells that are currently inbound. I’m glad I’ve provided myself sufficient time to unravel this conundrum in advance of Turkey season. I’ll also know soon whether or not the Tae Kwon Do schedule has me obligated for the 4/13 opener.
a light bulk-produced bird load will get you in spitting distance at shorter ranges. Then you can dial-in for the longer ranges with the good stuff.
That’s what i was figuring. I suppose I need to research turkey head dimensions, so I can accurately depict the silhouette with a sharpie on my scrap cardboard targets.
