I got up this morning and realized I had not posted since Christmas. Y’all are probably wondering what’s up. The answer is that I’m fine. Life’s great. I just needed some surgery. Life will be back to normal about 2/1. I’m having myself surgically altered to fit a deer rifle.

There is nearly no one left out there who remembers me without glasses. I’ve been wearing them since the 4th grade. I’m always been profoundly nearsighted. It had gotten to the point about 25 years ago that I could no longer hunt with iron sights, and that is when I put scopes on all my deer rifles and even my turkey shotgun.

Then came the cancer and the chemo about 3.5 years ago. As things settled out from the chemo, I realized my eyesight had improved. I was picking up a pistol from Hibberd’s Armory when I noticed a Rossi Stainless Model 92 on the pegs. I asked to have a look. For the first time in ages, I could sight with the standard buckhorn sights. By the next spring, I owned one. However, a few months later, my eyesight went south again, and at the final sight-in before deer season, I realized I could no longer see the sights or the target. The doc said I had cataracts developing. She gave me one new correction, but in the run-up to this season, I had the same problem even worse. The only avenue left was surgery.

I had this procedure scheduled for after New Year’s. By the time the appointment came, I was wishing I’d booked it earlier. If I closed my left eye, I could see 3 images just with my right. It was making driving tough. I went in this past Wednesday and I could not be happier with the result. I sat outside and watched the neighbor’s TV yesterday morning– that’s how good my right eye is. I get the left eye done in two weeks. There is a noticeable difference between the two. Besides clarity, the left image seems darker and noticeably yellower.

My long term plan is to go back and get fitted for glasses. I’ll still need correction for close-up stuff. I also do a lot that requires safety lenses. However, it’s now nice to look to the top of the tallest oak tree in the yard and see the buds forming or notice that the neighbor’s brickwork is not straight. I can’t wait to get back to the farm and see the work that’s been done.
