Success with Bob’s Model 44
Right now, I’m all alone at the farm. KYHillChick and Angus are down on the KY/TN line at the family reunion. Moose has a friend or two down at the campground. I’ve hardly seen them all weekend. The plan is for KYHillchick to stop at Sonny’s BBQ in Richmond on her way north and bring BBQ for dinner this evening– we’re all rendezvousing at the farmhouse at that point and staying through until Monday PM.
Before I left for the farm, I loaded up another 40 rounds of 44 Mag– Hornady 240 Grain XTP’s over Hodgdon H110. They don’t have to be MAX loads to deal with a whitetail at normal ranges.
Mid-morning, after getting some chores done, I sat down with the rifle and tried it out. After getting the previous load on paper at 25 yards, I knew I’d at least see holes on the cardboard target backing at 100. Sure enough, the 1st round was just barely on the target about 6 low and to the left. I made one more shot that printed close by, and then cranked it up so it was a tad high. Bottom line: within 8 shots I was shooting confidently 1.5 inches above the center of the bull. I’ll be able to shoot anything out to 125 yards without worrying about elevation. That’s more than adequate for a rifle that will see most of its work in treestand and on the ground in the cedar thickets.
In a side note, my neighbor, Jim, dropped by. We have a long border with each other that sort of meanders along a creek bed. Jim is proposing putting on a dam, and we discussed re-arranging the property lines so that I would share a good piece of frontage. It’s a darn good idea.
