What I did over Summer Vacation
If you’ve been reading this weblog for a few years, you will already know i usually go on hiatus about this time of year. It is usually hot. I’m usually not going down to the farm all that much, and I have not started seriously reloading for deer season.
Well, that’s all true this year. Except that a whole lot of stuff has been going on, and I’ve just been to daggone busy to write about it.
The New Floating Hole
Angus and I took the new boat out several times, hitting both Kincaid Lake and the Licking River at Falmouth. The outboard motor was a bit problematic, but I have found that a trolling motor does almost as well. We had half a dozen outings before we stopped going down to the farm. I’m happy with the acquisition.
Additions to the Deer Battery
I picked up two additions to the deer battery from SuperCore. He is in the process of reducing his inventory. One is a Mauser 98K sporter in the original 8mm. The other is a Marlin lever in 357 Magnum. I haven’t had time to take pictures, but I’m looking forward to working up loads for them.
SuperCore and our mutual friend, Fitz, came out to the farm for a little plinking. Fitz had a new AR in 458 SOCOM. Dang! Now there is a deer round. It is the rough equivalent of the 45-70. His rig and load were quite gentle on the shoulder. I think if I was hunting Indiana on a regular basis, I would look seriously at getting one of these.
Some time in August, I may be coming into another custom Mauser in 25-06. More on that as things develop.
The Big Move
The main reason I have not been posting much is that we have decided to move. Dad’s finally settled, and the family now has one house too much. I’ve been were I am in-town for over twenty years. Mom and Dad had gobs of furniture. The result is that I’m faced with the problem of combining two houses into one. The biggest task is going to be moving all the reloading supplies, gun accessories, etc. I am up to my ears in all that right at the moment. I promise pictures of the shamanic reloading cave as soon as I have things done.
A New Mower
The old mower at the farm up and died last month. I had to break from everything else going on to shop for a new rider. I finally settle on a 42 inch Cub Cadet from Anderson Equipment in Falmouth. With the old 42″ Craftsman, I could do the lawn at the farm in under 2 hours. The Cub Cadet does it in 40 minutes.
The Winch
My old S-10 has been retired to the farm to function as a Deer Recovery Vehicle. I saw a 9000lb winch on Harbor Freight.com and ordered it back before Turkey Season. This has got to be the best accessory I’ve ever had on a vehicle. I spent the Spring pulling cedar trees out of the pastures, using a Grabber HD . This was serious fun.
I have to run for now. Keep the cards and letters coming.
