The temperatures were pushing 60F down at the farm, so I decided to take Dolly down and introduce her to the place. We got there around sunrise Sunday, spent the night, and then came back early on Monday.
She got a good deal of firsts on this trip. She got to watch her first sunrise from the Thoughtful Spot. She got to her first turkey flock during flydown. Most importantly, she got her first leash walk down Vine Street to the Campground and back. We made a stop at the Honey Hole, where she got to hear her first turkey noises. There was a bunch of hens squabbling on Heartbreak Ridge. She also got to hear her first turkey gobble. One of the Sons of Moto sounded off just before sunrise on both days. She spent most of her trip with her nose in the leaves, but even a distant woodpecker would make her stop and listen. My guess is she’ll do well as our resident deer tracker and squirrel retriever.
After a hectic first day, she buried herself under my arctic bag and didn’t come out until breakfast.
Dolly still has not figured out about riding in the truck. Unlike our other dogs, she has not formed a concept of what is going on, so she spends all her time in the passenger seat with her head on my forearm, staring up at me. I finally got her to look out the window on the way back when a doe sauntered across the road on Holz Creek and stopped to give us the stink-eye.
