What Makes a Great Turkey Gun?
First off, turkey hunting is by its nature not all that demanding on guns. This is not wingshooting. This is not duck hunting. You make a shot, fill a tag, and that’s it. A cheap gun will do as well as the most expensive. Of all the systems I’ve tried, the pump is probably the best in my mind for weight, ease of operation and overall usability. I hunted with a semi for years. I’ve hunted with a bunch of others. Pumps have their problems, but they seem like the best for the job. Think cheap. A $150 pawn shop … More . . .
What do Deer Really See?
If you go to this website: Color Blindness Simulator
. . . and upload a photograph, and then pick the 2nd option marked “Red-Blind/Protanopia” It will give you a pretty good idea of what a deer sees.
More . . .Baking Soda– the Shamanic Method
Jake Simon August 12 at 3:36am Shaman, I hope all is well with you and yours! I am curious as to how you use baking soda. Do you dump it on everything or do you just put it in with your clothing like you would use it in your refrigerator? I am looking to try using it this year and am looking for any tips you would kindly share. His Blessings, Jake Thanks for asking. Now that Scent-Lok has been unmasked, I was meaning to write something about how to kick it up old school. My method is based on … More . . .
Bubba Paints His Turkey Gun
Whenever you start talking to gun snobs, every little thing a normal person does to their gun is a “Bubba Job.” The definition, as I have been able to refine it is 1)n: any modification to a firearm that the perpetrator did not know how do when he started. 2)n: any deliberate modification to a firearm that detracts from its resale value 3)vt: To Bubba a firearm is to make such modification as described above. I personally have no qualms about doing a Bubba Job on a firearm. I have taken a belt sander to the cheek piece of my … More . . .
UV Killers
Update 2014– I have updated this article, because this is still one my most-read pieces. It originally was an off-hand post on D&DH Forum. As we near the 6th anniversary, I thought I’d update things here and write a look back: UV Killer Redux It is absolutely ludicrous to believe that deer are sensitive to UV. The mammalian eye simply is not built to resolve visible light AND UV light– not to the extent purported. Deer do not have magic eyes. They see a lot like we do, except they see less red and more blue and green. (EDIT: I … More . . .
Best 30-06 Ammunition?
Overall the Whitetail is not that hard to kill. Just about anything you put into it is going to get good results. 30-06 is probably the best general-purpose round out there. On deer at normal deer ranges, it is probably a bit of overkill, but that’s okay– I’ll take overkill any day. In fact, ’06 is one of my favorites. I started out with 180 grainers and shot the first 10 years with them. I’d started out hunting boar, and I found a good load and bought as much of one lot as I could find. That was over twenty … More . . .
Making the Switch to H4895
With gas prices, inflation, etc. kicking me in the wallet, I decided that I would try a new reloading project. Before I got started in reloading, I had foresworn that I would refrain from trying to push the velocity/pressure envelope too far I have previously embarked on projects that optimized for accuracy and recoil. That usually left me using H4895 for a rifle powder. I reload in the following rifle calibers: 30-06, 308 Win, 35 Whelen, 30 WCF, 7.62X54R and .223 Rem. Over the past five years, I’ve used a bunch of powders: IMR3031, Varget, IMR4895, BL-C(2), to name a … More . . .
How many shots do I need to sight-in a rifle?
How many shots do I need to sight-in a rifle? Good question. Somebody asked it over at the 24HourCampfire in the optics forum. I won’t point you to it, because it quickly degraded into another pissy flame fest, common to that forum these days. (Sigh!) How many shots do I need to sight-in a rifle? How many have you got? Update: Here it is, 2014, and I the more I thought about this piece, the more I wanted to say more. See How Many Shots. . . Really . This is a very popular article, so I did not want … More . . .
More on Deer Intelligence
I would say that my orginal post was in no way attempting to anthropomorphize whitetail deer, but some folks seem to think so. Quite to the contrary, deer have intelligence and world view befitting a 4-legged herbivore, and that’s about it. You really don’t need that much upstairs to eat grass, pass grass, and make little grass eaters. I could get totally gratuitous and suggest this extends to some vegetarian humans I know, but that would be going to far for just a cheap laugh at my vegan acquaintances. Your average deer is certainly above turkey in intelligence. It is … More . . .
Ode to a 30-30 Pt 3 — Like A Dog Returneth
13699: Ode to a 30-30 11/12/02-10:41 AM Posted by: shaman from Shooters.com ODE TO A 30-30 PART III by Shaman As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool to his folly. Or at least that is how it felt. There I was, up in the stand at Heartbreak Ridge. The 30-30 was on the peg, loaded with 150 Gr Hornady. I had Dr. John’s autobiography open. I wasn’t particularly worried about hunting at that point. I just needed to cool down. I’d had the perfect spot picked out for opening day-a barn overlooking a scrape at the edge … More . . .
